The Double Edged Sword of the Martial Arts

From my friend Terry Bryad. Martial art philosophy that I speak of often.

In traditional Japanese and Okinawan martial arts they talk about Karate-Do and Karate-Jitsu. The emphasis of Karate-Do is that it is all about developing character, honor and integrity of the participant, the old “it doesn’t matter if you win or loose, it’s how you play the game that counts”.

Rory Miller Interview in Boston

Written by G. Mattson Wednesday, 04 August 2010 11:20

Rory was at SummerFest all three days and conducted numerous seminars on subjects covered in his "Meditations on Violence" book and topics that will be in his new book that is being published soon. Rory will be in Boston all week and if you have the opportunity to participate in one of his seminars, please do.

In this Youtube video, Sensei Jason Gould of Boston's Emerald Necklace Martial Arts sits down with Rory Miller, self-defense and tactics expert and author of "Meditations on Violence." The two discuss martial arts and real world violence: decisonmaking under stress, legal and ethical aspects of self-defense, conflict de-escalation, and the dynamics of fighting.

The Reason For SummerFest

When I first ran SummerFests back in 1983 and '84, we had more than 500 people show up during the five-day event on Thompson Island. The camp was a new experience for the Uechi community and no one quite knew what to expect.

Everyone was amazed by the great experience of spending a week with the living treasures of Okinawa and China. Imagine, having Grandmaster Kanei Uechi taking you through kata and providing corrections and fine tuning of your form. Imagine meeting many of the most famous Okinawan teachers, who before that week, students had only read about. And now you were actually working out with them! Imagine meeting all the senior North American instructors and being able to practice with them and learn many new and varied applications and techniques contained in our system.,

SummerFest was born and it was a huge success. With the passing of time and fracturing of Soke into more than 30 organizations, SummerFest survived and flourished, albeit with fewer numbers.

Uechi-ryu Seminars

Darin Yee, an IUKF board member is willing to teach seminars in all IUKF dojos upon request and if time is available.  They need to call or email Darin to arrange a date and time.

This is a fantastic opportunity to train with one a senior Uechi instructor who has an extensive Chinese Martial Art background and more importantly, able and willing to help Uechi practitioners understand how our art relates to its Chinese heritage and the many different systems Uechi-ryu is derived from.

A most interesting and educational experience.

Darin is one of the senior presentors at this year's SummerFest. Don't miss working with him. Best,

George E. Mattson

Strength and Power

The Difference between Strength and Power

In the Martial Arts

Strength is raw, unfiltered, relatively unfocused ability to move other objects.

Strength training involves some technique, but does not take high-level refinement into consideration

For the individual, strength has a sunset, after which it will wane.  Power, based on core principles, core use, relaxation, understanding, maturity, refinement of technique, can grow and progress throughout a person’s lifetime.  With continued practice and application, there should be no sunset.

Strength is a blunt instrument; power often involves refinement and awareness.

Strength can be isolated to individual muscle groups.  It can involve multiple groups, but emphasis isn’t usually on coordination of groups.

Power generated is a function of combined activations.  Because these activations can be multiplicative, power can progress in a geometric, rather than an arithmetic fashion.

Power takes time into consideration.
