| Note: In the course of a month I get
literally thousands of e-mail. I don't normally place correspondence in the
"Mailbag" that are either labeled "personal" or contain information of
a personal nature. As I read and answer mail, if I find a letter that I find interesting,
amusing, topical or educational, it gets filed in my "mailbag" for future use in
this feature. I try to edit out any personal information like addresses or telephone
numbers, unless the writer specifically requests that I publish it. I welcome all e-mail and will answer everyone in as timely a manner as possible. Don't be surprised if you find (or don't find) your message in this section. However, if you are concerned about your letter finding its way into the "Mailbag", simply include in the header or at the beginning of message "personal" and I will honor your request. GEM |

Dear Fellow Martial Arts Enthusiasts:
A friend of mine gave me "Uechiryu Karate Do" to read and study when he heard I was studying "Black Tiger" Kunf Fu under the senseiship of mister Taylor at the YMCA. This is such a fanscinating text that I would like to receive your newsletter and info on other Uechi-ryu publications and videos.
Yours in the Martial Arts,
Richard
Valrico, FL
Thanks for the kind letter Richard. I send out an occasional
Newsletter by e-mail and a once a year "snailmail" publication. I'll
put you on both lists. GEM

I am trying to locate a school teaching Uechi Ryu near my office. Do you know where I can go on line to find a listing of association member schools?
Thanks
Douglas Cook
Hi Douglas:
We have an "instructor's" listing, located at http://uechi-ryu.com/dojolist.htm
Where are you located? You might also try posting to the "Looking for dojo/instructor" Forum.
GEM
Thanks. I work just outside Philadelphia. I had been working with Steve Drehobl since he and I live in the same town. My new job has me working later and commuting longer so its been very difficult to get back to work with him.
thanks again
Douglas

Hello My name is Dean Lowe ,I'm a student of Terry Daly's in London, England. I spoke to you in the past about my club in Benfleet, Essex, England which was opened about four years ago now. I would be very grateful if you could add it to your Instructor Directory, I wanted to wait until it was established and that it could do myself and the style justice. I have trained with Terry since I was 8 yrs old, I'm 31 now and was lucky to walk into a karate club with such high standards. I try hard to continue with what I was lucky enough to be a part off. I regularly take my students to train with Terry in London. This gives Terry a chance to see the standard of my students and for him to comment to me ,which up to now as been very positive. I look forward to hearing from you in the near future. Many Thanks Dean Lowe

I hope we can have a good turn -out for Bill.

Hello,
George, hope all is well. Great, thanks for helping me out with the videos. Just let me know what you need me to do.
Also, could you tell me if there are any Uechi's schools in the Atlanta area needing a grappling instructor, part-time. Or someone to do seminars of clinics, I am free to do so.. I do not think I am going to open a school up here. I will teach private lessons mostly. I am leaving teaching at the end of May. I am going to be a private investigator, I am hoping.
If I am an investigator this summer I will be able to come up to assist with the camp. Keep in touch and thanks again.
Pedro Bennett
Hi Pedro. We missed you at camp this year and hope you will be able to make it next year. I'm working on getting your great self-defense video on our store. Should be available this week. We'll sell both the video and DVD for $30 and $32. Look up Bruce Hirabayashi. You met him at camp. GEM

George:
. . . I am interested in the specific rules for the tournament you are planning for next May. Do you have a copy of them you can send me along with the format of the
tourney? As per our conversation, it's important that competitors know the rules and compete within the framework of those rules.
Thanks, Steve Goss
Watch the tournament site for details. I'm working on the date and place for the May event. Carlos is sending a seven man team for the Team Competition. Hoping to hear from other countries as well. GEM

News from Japan:
Hello Senseis,
Things in Japan are settling nicely. I've decided to move closer to Tokyo, and I'll be living in Hiroo, near Shibuya, starting on December 25th. I would be interested in contacting any Uechi schools (or any other schools, for that matter) in the Tokyo area that you can recommend.
I hope all is well in Boston, and everybody is training hard and staying safe. Please give my best to those at the Hut and at Brandeis.
Best, /.s./ http://www.azuen.net/~seth/biginjapan

Dear Sensei Mattson
I have been in receipt of the Nigiri Game "Kami" sent to me by Sensei Dunn for almost a month now. They really are quite the thing. I use them every time I train in my dojo. They are very professional looking and I am privileged to have a set in my traditional Okinawan dojo.
I will send the word around the IOGKF about these wonderful jars. I will send Sensei Dunn a photo when I get around to remembering to bring my camera to the dojo.
Regards, Bob Kelley

Goodday George,
Its RAY from Australia .Just a question do you only have Uechi photos of just American Uechi on your web site .I was thinking if sending you a photo of my classes to you if you could use
them, on your web site or a tournament one to you. If not its alright but though i'll ask
anyway. We enjoy you site and all the information it holds.
Many Thanks Ray
With the new format of the Uechi website, you will be able to edit your own page, with pictures and events from your area. GEM

Mr. Mattson,
I see that there are many areas on your web site are not working correctly or not up to date for some time. I am sorry that people (Hackers) can not stay out. I hope you can get it back.
I want to ask about the Geo. Ball (?). Are they used to build up the wrist or forearm or both? If it is; you can use a tennis ball to do the same.
Again, I hope everything is fine with you and your family.
Sincerely Charles Roberts
We aren't having trouble with Hackers, Robert. My new web server is giving us lots of trouble. When the new group took over our account, they lost over a month of content, links and archives. What a mess...
(We've since found most of the missing material.)
We are moving to a new and hopefully permanent site, which should be in affect by the end of this month.
The roller ball is neat. The gyroscopic action of the ball works against the muscles of the hand, wrist and arm. The faster the rotation the more resistance. The resistance points rotates as well. Difficult to explain, but very effective.

Dear Sensei Mattson:
I used to practice Uechi in Argentina with Sensei Gustavo Gondra. I've been living in Chicago, IL now for over 6 years. I believe there isn't any uechi school in this state. After a break of 6 years I am now taking Shotokan. I still would like to have some reference material so I can go back and review uechi katas. I would appreciate if you
could recommend a book or video on kata step-by-step up to sho-dan level.
Thank you in advance for your time.
Sincerely,
Paola Bortolin
Hi Paola:
You might contact David Kahn, who teaches Uechi-ryu in the Chicago area. David is an excellent instructor who is a member of the International Uechi-ryu Karate Federation.
Please go to http://uechi-ryu.com and click on "store", then books or video tapes. Lots of great books and
videos/DVDs for you to select from.
Let me know if, after reviewing the selections, you have any questions relating to which item to get.
Good luck. Stay in touch. GEM
And a quick response from Paola:
Thank you very much for your kind response. I've already sent an email to Sensei Kahn. I'm eagerly looking forward to joining the Uechi family again.
Regards,
Paola Bortolin

Hi George,
I live in Westchester County in NY State. I'm interested in Uechi Ryu and I understand that a Sensei Jay Nussbaum resides in Westchester, but I have been unable to locate him. Would you happen to have any info on him? Thanks for any help you can provide.
Regards,
Shelly

Mr. Mattson:
A long time ago (about 20 years) I was enrolled in Karate with Walter Matson -- I now live in Northern VA and am looking to start up again. Do you know anyone who teaches in Northern VA? Nestor Folta is listed as being in Springfield (where I live) , but I am having difficulty reaching him.
We have many Tai Kwon Do schools in the area -- but I really wanted to stick with Uechi Ryu.
Thanks for your help.
-Brian Gottlieb
I've sent you Bill Glasheen's email address. He knows how to
get in touch with Nestor. I've also sent you the last email address I have for
Nestor. Good luck with your training and stay in touch. GEM

Have you seen Chris lately? I haven't heard from him in over a year.
Stay in touch.

I'm a distributor for this service and would be very pleased to give you a tour.

Hi there,
I actually haven't seen him for about a year also but I did go down to there new location the other day. If I see him " which
