Dear Mr. Mattson,
Thank you for e mailing me concerning the order for the shirt. If possible, the white XXL shirt sounds great. It is a gift for my boyfriend, former New York Mets pitcher, Lenny Langlois from Plainfield, Connecticut.
Lenny studied Uechi-Ryu Karate under Steve Jordan and Nick Lombardi. After the dojo closed and they went back to Providence, Lenny sure missed them. After reconstruction of a ligament in his pitching arm, Lenny said it was Uechi-Ryu karate that enabled him to throw again. He said that if every pitcher took this art, even Sanchin, there would be less injury.
Lenny had 2 older brothers in the marine corps who were both in Vietnam. One brother went to Okinawa after his tour and lived there while studying Isshinryu under Tatsuo Shimabuku. Sorry for the spelling errors. Lenny use to talk about you all the time with Steve Jordan and wondered if you knew where he could be found. I know you are very busy so I'm very grateful for your time.
Thank you,
Dawn
I'm not a baseball fan, (not even the Red Sox) but I'm impressed that a professional pitcher studied Uechi-ryu. I often tell my students that learning to use one's
'lats' for punches, help protect the elbow and shoulder from injuries. I suspect a pitcher would also be helped from this emphasis.
Please give my best regards to Lenny and anytime either of you are in the Boston area, please be sure to visit my Saturday class in Newton. Sorry you missed the camp....
Thanks for the order. It's on the way.
Best, George

Hello George and Susan!
Finally our computer is back to normal after a new video card and a harddrive clean out! Computers can be great or you can sometimes have the desire to launch them out on the front lawn! ;-)
We are both so sorry that we missed your camp this year, but unfortunately, it just couldn't be helped. The flu that we thought Dave had turned out to be scarlet fever (after three visits to hospital outpatients, numerous blood tests, four bags of i.v., x-rays and even an ultrasound...). It was pretty scary, but we're thankful to say that he is now feeling better and starting to come around. Goodness knows who he picked it up from, but it will likely always be a mystery.
Dave still has plans and tickets to go to BC on Aug. 23 to see six of our students: Ryan Lindsay, Chad Lindsay, Greg DaRos, Brad Bodechon, Alex Matjanec and Kenny Rayne - who will compete on the Nova Scotia Karate Team at the Nationals in Richmond, BC. It is the first time (that we know of) that Uechi Ryu will be represented from Nova Scotia...and even perhaps the first time in Canada. We are proud that our students have made the effort to break new ground. It isn't easy being the new kids on the team, but I think they have made their mark. It will be exciting to see the results. We'll keep you posted!
Heard it was a great camp which was very well attended! Congratulations! Our students really enjoyed it and have been telling us all about it since they got back. Hopefully, we'll be able to make it next year - it's already on the calendar!
Talk to you soon and take good care, Joanne and Dave

Sensei,
I wanted to drop you a note letting you know what an asset Mike Murphy Sensei is to the IUKF. He took his time to come and visit/train me and some of my students here in Quakertown PA. We had great fun and Mike sensei helped us all improve our Uechi-Ryu. It was also a pleasure to meet Gene DeMambro who worked out and also helped us.
It's people like them that will build good will and promote the high standards of the IUKF.

More Valuable Charles Roberts Tips!
Mr. Mattson,
Just recently I was teaching my daughter how to do around house kick. I have some traffic cones. The ones that are tall. I cute the top out and placed a large ball on top. Had her to kick that the ball using the correct movements. After she was able to kick it with ease, then I put a smaller ball on top and had her to repeat the practice. By doing this she came more accurate in doing her kicks. This is an idea that someone can use in the dojo or at home. I would recommend that you place a line on the ball and to the stand.
Thank you for your time. I hope you like the idea.
Sincerely
Charles Roberts
Great idea Charles. Wonder where we should get those traffic cones!!! :)
Best, George
You can buy them. Around here it can be at a hardware store or where the people that work on road construction buy them.

Hi George,
I just wanted to drop you a line about Tom Sarrouf. I'm sure you remember him from summer camp last year. Just to update you Tom is an ikkyu at the Berkshire Martial Arts Academy in Cheshire. He left last September for Special Forces training at Fort Benning and on Thursday, August 17, he was awarded his Green Beret. We at the dojo are very proud of Tom and I wanted to share his accomplishment with you. He should be finishing his training and be back with us sometime after the first of the year.

Hello Mattson Sensei,
I just wanted to scratch this off right away to let you know how much daughter Kristen and I enjoyed the camp experience this year. Watching our Sensei Bruce Witherell promote to 7th dan was the highlight for both me and Kristen. --- I always enjoy and feel good about the time that I spend with you, the chats that I have with you, and the seniors, and of course with Susan. --- Thank you George.
Craig Cross, Shodan
Special thanks and "way to go" to Sensei Evan Pantazi ... I do so enjoy the way you are ... Please keep coming and sharing with us what you know.

Sensei,
Sir again I forward my many heartfelt thanks to you and all the great folks you have brought together to form Uechi Ryu! The enthusiasm, openess and sharing attitudes of all are a beacon fro the Martial Arts world. This years Camp was run as smooth as glass and it is a tribute to yourself and wonderful wife Susan!
My seniors all send their appreciation and round of applause for your endeavours to further the Martial Arts to new and brighter levels. Everyone involved was amazed and thoroughly enjoyed this fantasic weekend and very much look forward to next years Camp...we will greatfully accept your invitation to join you again!
Respectfully, Evan Pantazi
Thanks Evan. I made a couple of major blunders, such as not anticipating the rain on Sunday, but for the most part, things ran pretty good.
For next year, I've already made arrangements to use Fletcher Hall for lectures and demonstrations. Fletcher holds 300 people in stadium seating with a stage and microphone. We have also ordered a huge tent for the evening activities and a place during the day for instructors to rest. I've already made arrangements to have lots of seminars for Dojo administrators and instructors. I'll keep you posted as developments happen.
Thanks again for your support and help.
Best, George

Dear George:
I hope it's all right calling you George. I just finished my weekend at your Karate summer camp. I started studying Karate in January. Words can't express how I felt. It was an experience I shall never forget. Sanchin by the Sea was very enlightening. It seemed like you had been watching me and knew what all of my difficulties were. Now I have to practice what you taught and with Steve as my Sensei that will not be difficult. He brings out the best in all of his students.
I took as many classes as I could from David Elkins and Rafi Derderian. I went to the class on fear and on Use of Force and came away with a wealth of information. I plan to bring a tape recorder next year as you only remember about 25% of what you hear. It was very thrilling for me to be able to watch the Don test on Saturday Night. Just watching all of them do their Sanchin was impressive and inspiring for me. I could see at the test that they all had worked very hard to get to where they were. I hope with lots and lots of hard work I one day will get my black belt.
I am looking forward to next summer. I will be back. I hope you will continue to allow us all to watch the
Dan Test in the future. I am sure it is a real thrill to be able to see your Sensei get his next degree. Again I would like to thank you for the opportunity to learn and improve my Karate by having this Summer Camp. I could see how much work you put into the Camp to organize and put everything together. I feel privileged and honored to have been able to meet you and attend some of your classes.
Sincerely, Dorothy Reitman
The letter was marked "Personal". I thought everyone would enjoy the contents though, so asked Dorothy for permission to use it here. GEM
Dear George:
Yes, you may use my letter any where it will help you. I got a thrill seeing your web site with one of the Summer Camp's pictures. I looked at it and thought I know exactly where that was taken. I, at times, tend to look at things in a negative way and I found the weekend I was at the Camp I looked at everything in a Positive way. I want to continue in my positive thinking. My life has changed dramatically since I started studying Karate. I want to tell everyone I meet they should study Uechi Ryu Karate.
Dorothy.

I want to thank you and Susan for your generosity and support. Having me at the camp gives me the chance to meet great people and share acupuncture with them. There are fewer and fewer non believers each year. I enjoyed teaching some "push hands" with karate-ka. They catch on quickly-from stiff to soft.
I hope to further that with them next year. This was my most exciting year. All those treatments; all those potential Taiji students. And all those returning friends. Susan, I lost my info sheet for the Essiac. Not the one inside package but the one that Keith gave me earlier. Could you send me one? Thanks.

Sensei Mattson,
It was a pleasure attending your summer camp. I want to thank you on behalf of Soke Petronelli and our Kuntao Jujitsu organization. Everyone of us enjoyed the camp and found the people there to be courteous, unbiased and receptive. It was great to see some of our friends in the Martial arts such as Windsong Blake, Evan Pantazi, Pedro Bennett and also to have made some new friends.
Thank you again for having us and please keep us posted for any upcoming events. We are looking forward towards your next summer camp and wish you continued success.

Dear Sensei,
Sorry to bother you but have a pal who is going over to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates to work soon. I was wondering of you or anyone in the Uechi circle can tell me if there is a dojo in this region ? Regards,

I've posted all my contacts on the "instructor's" page, which can be found at:

Dear Sensei Mattson,
Thank you for taking your valuable time to assist in my enquiry. Will pass on the info to Barrie if that is OK. Hope all is well for you and Susan. One of the guys who came with me to Boston way back in 1977 (!) Kenny Smith ( along with Bill and Ron, with Terry Daly visiting family and friends ) has just had a big heart operation ( which is quite apt ! ) This makes one think how very mortal we all are. He has put his heart and soul into spreading Uechi-ryu since we started here in 1974 and has been a good friend since we first met in 1967. He is one of the few karate-ka with more time "in" than yours truly that I know over here ! I wondered if there was a place on the website that could take a mention of him ? Kenny was of great help and encouragement to Terry Daly when he first started off his dojo in the East End of London a while back.
Best wishes to you and yours and all in the Uechi organization.
Yours respectfully,
Pete R

Dear Mr. Mattson;
My question is about an article of five tones in hung gar kung fu, relating five tones to the five main organs and chi flow to them in kata, soft, medium, and high. Hah = lungs =gold =leopard=strength. Hoor=wood = Liver, bladder = crane = essence. Chi = water = kidneys = snake = Chi . Hoor = fire = heart = tiger = bone. Umm = earth = spleen = dragon = spirit.
These are all the beginning tones, do we have our own tones in uechi-ryu kata that affect us the same way? Please let me know if there is or can we use the same tones starting with sanchin? Thank You for your time.

Hello George,
The reason for writing this Mail to you is that "Alois" has decided to visit the Uechi - ryu Camp 2000. I have discovered some Tapes on your Internet Store which I would like to obtain, so if you don't have to much trouble with organizing the Camp, you
could give them to Alois, when you see him. (Or maybe tell him to buy them himself.) The Tapes are: 1) The search for Shusiwa (2 Tapes) 2) Vidmag 12 "Wakiyama Uechi -

I'm looking forward to Summer Camp 2001, because it seems that I will be there. Thank you for your efforts!

Dear George,
I just wanted to confirm that I received the book (Scissors, Rock, Paper)here in the UK today, the 6th July. I hope you don't think I was being too impatient with my recent e-mail; it's not only that I was keen to read the book, but I'm working on some ideas for a redesign of Lawrence Tan's website and so needed to scan the front cover. At least you will now have an idea of how long it might take for a similar order in the future (about 21/2 to 3 weeks in this case).
The book is great, I have already read a lot of it! It is a shame that it is not more widely (readily) available in Europe e.g. Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.de. Even Amazon.com didn't have it when I checked. Rest assured that if my website ideas are accepted by Master Tan, I shall keep, and elaborate on, the link to your company in relation to the above book.
Many thanks, take care.

George,
I would like to take a moment to thank you, Susan, and your staff for another excellent camp. As always, I enjoyed meeting the Uechi-ka, and felt privileged to be able to work with them on the basics and kata of Yamanni Ryu bojutsu. It was very inspirational for me to teach to Uechi-ryu students and instructors who showed such genuine interest in learning and working hard. I came away from camp tired, but invigorated and ready for another year of personal training and growth. Thanks, again, for facilitating this opportunity for us.

I want to thank you again for a wonderful camp this year. Living in central Pennsylvania, I really miss those
Wednesday evening classes and the Saturdays at the Hut. Summer camp was an opportunity to see old friends make some new ones, and work out intensely doing Uechi stuff. I am practicing as much as I can on my own. We have a great patio in the back of the house, just the perfect size! I get up to Collegeville as much as I can. Steve's students are progressing, so we can start working on more intermediate stuff. I am also working out with George Dillman in Reading, this is not far from Lancaster, so it works out well. I hope to get up to Massachusetts in September. I will let you know the date before we come.

I was admiring your web-site and I wanted to say "FANTASTIC!". I was under the training of Sensei Ahti Kaend, unfortunately I had to leave unannounced due to my career. Now that I am back in California I am still a long distance from his dojo, are there any other dojos in Los Angeles, Whittier area of California. I was bamboozled into a Kempo style of Karate which only wanted my hard earned money and was unhappy. I have tried calling and emailing Sensei Kaend, but have been unsuccessful. Can you help me, I will very much appreciate it.

Dear George As a student of Uechi these many years and realizing all of the benefits of our style both mentally and physically as well as knowing for sure that Uechi is a very effictive infighting style there is one series in the system that I have never been comfortable with, and that is the Dan Kumite.
I find fault with the Dan with these observations.
#1 There are far too many blocks and deflections in it.
#2 The left leg is practically useless except for a couple of kicks going either
way.
#3 It must have been created by right handed individuals. To the untrained eye it looks impressive but I personally don't find it combat effective. We all did the Dan over the years because we had too in order to advance in rank and most did it without
question.
I did question a few blackbelts over the years and told them my thoughts, but they blew it off as much as to say don't rock the boat it could upset the higher ranks. Personally I feel the Dan should be
modified, changed completely or dropped from the system, and a more realistic two person set be created. I realize that I may have just kicked many students and senior instructors sacred cow right smack in the udder but I make no apologies for questioning the Dan's ineffectiveness.
Respectfully,
Jim Robinson
Thanks for your letter Gerry. You are not alone in your assessment of Dan kumite. Many of us also feel that Seisan bunkai need revamping as well.
For the time being though, it is the best we have. IUKF has been addressing this issue for over five years and have made many suggestions for changes to both the bunkai and dan kumite. (You may have noticed that we changed the Konshiwa bunkai considerably. Clip is on our website)
You should post your letter on Bill Glasheen's forum. I'm sure you will be surprised by all the support you will receive regarding this issue.
Stay in touch.

Dear Mr Mattson;
I am an old pupil of Uechi-ryu from 30 years ago in Australia. My teacher was Ati Kaend (sorry if I misspelled). He then taught Graham Morris who remains my good friend to this day. I now live in Canada and am feeling somewhat nostalgic. Call it a mid life crisis. I almost reached Shodan under Graham when I had to leave Australia. What I am asking for now is a memento. I would be proud to carry a Uechi-ryu card with me signed by you if al all possible. I did eventually make Shodan by the way but in Shorin-ryu which I found to be the closest to Uechi. I am very glad that Uechi-ryu is still going strong and thriving. I have never forgotten the lessons it taught me and they are inside of me still. Thank you sir for your attention.

Hey Sensei, Got a call from my old Instructor inviting me to train/test out in Seattle. Everyone I used to know in while living in Montana, for the most part has moved up to Seattle. I took a 2 part test that was pretty difficult. The 1st part was a physical test that was pretty demanding (I was not up to speed) the second part was a fighting test that I did better at but I was pretty spent. It's kind of a survival test where the candidates are supposed to fail. I was told I wasn't ready. Maybe next year. It was pretty disheartening, but they are great guys and they have my interests at heart. I'll know the result for certain down the line, but it does not look favorable. Anyway back to the drawing board. should have been better prepared, but having a good vacation anyway.
Hope you are well.

Mr.Mattson,
I am writing you to inform you of the death of a former student of yours. This student was my father Ronald G. Dalbec. He trained with you in Manchester New Hampshire in the 1960's. I had attended a class one evening and was inspired and amazed at the events of the evening. I was also a hit with one of your students, I made him laugh with my double jointed fingers and he said I would be good at Karate. Well the inspiration of my Father and You and your students was enough for me and I had it in my mind to pursue that goal of someday studying Karate.
Well I am now a Second Degree Black Belt in the American Kenpo System of Karate. My Instructor is Mr. Vincent Anfuso, and our Instructor is Mr. Michael Robert Pick, a First Generation Black Belt of Mr. Ed Parker who i'm sure you know is deceased. I also know another person you know Mr. Noah Mandel. It really is a small world. My Father passed away on August 8th 2000 and going through some old pictures I found a picture of him in the group photo of a class of yours. It brought back some very special memories of that special night of inspiration.
I found this web site by chance and I felt the need to send you a message of thanks and also to inform you of my Father. I hope you get this message personally and again Thank You for enriching my Fathers' Life and Mine. Sincerely Jean G. Dalbec
Sorry to hear about your father Jean. Ironically, I lost my father last week! He was 93 years old and had a wonderful life. But I miss him non-the-less.
If you send me a photo and a brief biography, I'll include it in our "memorial" page as a tribute.
Stay in touch. GEM.
