MailBag Feedback Forum archives.
New Mailbag Feedback Bulletin Board Respond to letters, Ask questions,
Say hello.  Read what others have written.

Note: In the course of a month I get literally thousands of e-mail. I don't normally place correspondence in the "Mailbag" that are either labeled "personal" or contain information of a personal nature. As I read and answer mail, if I find a letter that I find interesting, amusing, topical or educational, it gets filed in my "mailbag" for future use in this feature. I try to edit out any personal information like addresses or telephone numbers, unless the writer specifically requests that I publish it.

I welcome all e-mail and will answer everyone in as timely a manner as possible. Don't be surprised if you find (or don't find) your message in this section. However, if you are concerned about your letter finding its way into the "Mailbag", simply include in the header or at the beginning of message "personal" and I will honor your request. GEM

Mr.Mattson, I was refered to you after speaking with Jake Stienmann about Tony's Seminar at your upcoming camp. It looks like I'll be in the Boston/Cape area (I'm now in NJ) that weekend and would love to attend his workshop. I'm recently back from China, and am continuing my research in teaching/coaching/learning the martial arts (my background is mostly in BaguaZhang & TaijiQuan). I'm hoping you can help me out with some details for attending the event and such. Thank you for your time. Regards & happy training, David Lepp

Still room for Tony's seminar. Go to http://uechi-ryu.com/camp2000 and register! GEM

Hi George,

The "Bay State Karate Championships" is being held on Saturday, September 23, 2000 at the North Shore Community College, Lynn Campus, Lynn, Mass. There are over 140 divisions including separate Uechi-Ryu Forms and Uechi-Ryu Kyu and Dan Kumite Divisions. This tournament is open to all styles, including, but not limited to, Karate, Kung-Fu and Tae-Kwon-Do. Special Guests at the event are Master Yoshiharu Arakaki, president of the "World Uechi-Ryu Karate-Do Shobukai, Okinawa, Japan and Master Gustavo Gondra, Chief Representative of Uechi-Ryu Karate-Do Shobukai and the International Karate Association, Buenos Aires, Argentina. The Tournament is A-rated KRANE, BBB-Rated NASKA and SKITA. Please call Uechi-ryu Kiyoshi Manny Neves at his dojo (781)595-8870 for further information.

Are there any dojos that instruct Uechi-Ryu Karate on Cape Cod in MA? I wanted to take Karate classes and since I studied Uechi-Ryu for a short time as a boy, I wanted to know if there was on Cape for me to attend. As of yet, I have not been able to find this out. Let me know if you can. :-)

I believe Art Rabesa (8th dan) has a small group that works out in Falmouth. Please post your notice on the Forums (looking for dojo/instructor) and someone will contact you.

Are you coming to Camp? (Bourne, Ma)

GREAT WEB SITE

Hello. I just wanted to tell you that I really enjoyed browsing your site. An E-Mail message was not good enough to tell you so I thought you might enjoy this Warrior Greeting Card.

I would like you to add your site to the Warrior Links Resource section of the Sakura Martial Arts Supply Co. site. I will personally validate your site when we receive your submission. Perhaps you will consider adding a link to our site from your fine site. Please let me know when you do. I will be sure to visit your site again soon and recommend it to some of our customers. Best in the Martial Arts, Ando Higuchi

Dear Master Mattson, Just a short note thanking you for the info on the summer camp. I am sorry I wont be attending this year. I hope all is well with you and Susan. I think of you both often. Sending you both best wishes.

I am interested in saving the wooden man form in mpeg form. Is there a way to do it so I can watch it off line?

Thanks in advance

Best to check with Evan on his Forum Ron. GEM

George, I appreciate for your update. i have one of your book - the way of karate but not in dept of uechi. which book of yours are more into uechi.

cheers. philip lau

Uechi-ryu Karate Do is the most popular Uechi book published. I wrote it in 1974. It contains pictures of Kanei Uechi performing kata and lots of old philosophy and tips. The Black Belt Test Guide was published in 1984. It has lots of newer Uechi techniques and tips. Both are excellent reference books.

Hi !!!! George,

This is Yukiaki Yoki from Kobe Japan.

I found you through one of my student Bill Mok (Hong Kong) and Betty D'remio.

So many years passed and glad to learn you and your Dojo doing very well.

Mr. Seigo passed 2 years ago and Mrs Seigo heritaged. Lot more, but I just wanted to say Hi! to you and everybody at your Dojo.

Yoki

Dear George,

Thank you for your usual quick answer.

Due to The Earthquake 1995 in Kobe I lost a lot & I had to start something else to survive.

Now am working at one of the air craft manufacturer in Kobe as an interpreter & translator for Boeing 4&1/2 year.

Since Boeing & douglas joined , some series which competes stopped to produce, then work decreased. In Japan economic is terrible.

Re my karate-do , I' m glad my students doing so well Bill Mok of Hong Kong, and Jose Ashiam of Macau with more than 20,000 grand sons & daughters in the world.

I still maintain my position at Seigokan at the boarder of Overseas.

However, myself I don't believe anymore of the Tournament, nor free sparing anymore.

But I added " Ki " in my Karate , I trust you know.

It's more relaxation gives you more power. However I don't talk to people as they afraid of occult, someday it will be defined.

I suppose you are busy.

Hope to talk to you again.

What a wonderful surprise to hear from you Yoki! So nice to learn that you are doing well. > I was disappointed to hear that Seigo Sensei passed away. Please give my condolences to Mrs Seigo.

I'm enclosing some information on my Aug Camp. Hopefully one day you will be able to visit as my guest.

Please stay in touch.

Best, George

Oss! Gmstr. Mattsaon,

In case you don't remember me, I am the GoJu stylist who emailed you about having been present at your Rokudan promotion on the rock.

Firstly, Maestro Urban says hello.

It is an honor to be on your email list.

May I be so bold as to ask you to autograph my 1st edition ca. 1963 copy of The Way Of Karate?

I got it this collectors item from ebay. It originally was purchased from the SF library.

If this is possible, I will send it to you along with whatever payment necessary.

Dear Mr. Mattson:

This note is to thank you from the bottom of my heart for keeping a letter posted on your "Mailbag" page that I wrote to you back in May 1996. At that time I was searching for Yukiaki Yoki ("Yoki") and was hoping that you knew his whereabouts. Well, although you weren't able to provide me with any information, you did me a GREAT BIG favor by keeping my inquiry posted along with all your other letters.

It is because of your "Mailbag" that I have since been able to get in touch with Yoki - one of his former students saw my letter and took the time to inform Yoki that I was looking to get in touch with him. I am so grateful to you for not eliminating my letter from your web page. I have been searching the internet continuously over the years, to no avail - however, thanks to you and your web site I have been able to get in touch with a good friend after some 30 years.

Thank you, Mr. Mattson - my heart is filled with much appreciation.

Best Regards,

Betty (DiRamio) Greenberg

Best to Carmine Betty. Tell him we miss him at class!

ps. hope he can drop in to visit us at camp this year!

Dear Sensei Mattson,

I hope that this year's summer camp is a great success ! Best wishes,

Love your site and the forums (just a lurker). They're always informative. Just wanted to let you know that on the forums page the summer camp forum description states it's for summer camp '99. I've been looking at it for months and never noticed. :-)

Dear Mr. Mattson,

I am a former Uechi Ryu student and am looking to get back into training. I have recently moved to central Illinois and would like to know if there are any dojos in my immediate area. My zip code is 61704, and I am about 2 hours southeast of Chicago.

Any information you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

hey George, Tony Pfeiffer here -- you may recall, friend of Bob Roth and I had the Uechi Ryu Black Belt issue. I have one more copy of same. If I send you a description, will you post it on your auction site again?

OK Tony. GEM

thanks so much George ---

This six page story includes includes five photos of Kanei Uechi in poses from the Sanchin, Seisan, and Sansure-Roku katas. Another photo depicts Kanbum Uechi, founder of Uechi-Ryu karate. Also worthy of note is a photo showing a young George Mattson "defending against a kick (it's a flying kick)." Chapter headings in this historic write up include; "Americans in Uechi-Ryu," "The Master's son, "Sanchin is the Heart," and "Experiments in Armor." This rare issue is in exceptional condition. Dear Sensei Mattson,

Thank you for all the information and update about the Uechi site. I was amazed at the price for the blue book ! The only one I saw was the one that Ron Ship had. Wonder if he knows what it is valued at now. My very best wishes to you and all the participants at the Summer Camp. Hope it goes well for all concerned.

Dear Mattson Sensei,

I was reading the June 1998 mailbag, and I read an email that I hadn't previously read before, written by Simon Laily. And since I really don't want to flail you with to many questions, I was wondering if you could tell me whether or not Mr. Laily wrote the book he was talking about writing in his email, in that 1998 mailbag. I just assume that Mr. Laily's book (if its indeed finished) would pacify my intense fascination with the history of Uechi-Ryu/Pangainoon karate =)

Thanks in advance, Mike Vinoski.

Last time I spoke with Simon, he did not mention finishing (or beginning) his book. You might contact John Spenser (instructor's section of the web) for information on the booklet he published, or considered publishing, on the life of Kanbun Uechi. He gives a seminar on the subject at our camp every year.

Best, George Mattson

Please send info. on uechi-ryu, im very interested in this sport, i live in New Brunswick , Canada. please send as soon as possible.

Sensei Mattson:

I am a Uechi student (Nidan) in Boston, MA. I maybe moving to Vermont and I have not been able to find any Uechi Schools up there. Are you aware of any Uechi schools or teachers there.

Respectfully,

Peter Thorne

Dear Sensei Mattson,

I was wondering if you could tell me anything about the "lost kata" of Uechi-Ryu that I've heard about on a few occasions in the past. I think it's called "siempie" (sp?) or something, and I think it has 108 steps in it, or 110, I'm just not sure. Could you tell me anything about it? I was just curious as to whether or not our style has 8 or 9 kata.

Thank you, Mike.

Lots of discussion has taken place about Superempai on the Forums. Bill Glasheen and Simon Lailey both have a video tape on the kata. Go to the forums and do a search. If you still have any questions, get back to me. Best, George Mattson

Dear Sensei Mattson,

I recently visited the page http://gojuryu.net/kata.html, and after reading it I have some questions about Goju/Uechi kata that I thought I might ask you... On the website it says, "Almost all of the Goju Ryu kata were handed down from Higaonna Kanryo Sensei. Higaonna Sensei had studied and trained for many years under Ryu Ryuko Sensei in Fukien Province, China. The following kata were handed down by Higaonna Sensei from Ryu Ryuko Sensei: Sanchin, Saifa, Seiyunchin, Shisochin, Sanseru, Sepai, Kururunfa, Sesan, and Suparinpei. "Many of the kata names are Chinese numbers symbolizing Buddhist concepts. For example, Suparinpei (the number 108 in Chinese) has a special significance in Buddhism. It is believed that man has 108 evil passions, and so in Buddhist temples on December 31st, at the stroke of midnight, a bell is rung 108 times to drive away those spirits. The number 108 in Suparinpei is calculated from 36 X 3. The symbolism of the number 36 is given in the explanation of Sanseru which follows. The number 3 symbolizes past, present and future. "Sanseru, written in Chinese characters, is the number 36. Symbolically it is calculated from the formula 6 X 6. The first six represents eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and spirit. The second six symbolizes colour, voice, taste, smell, touch, and justice. "Sepai, similarly, is the number 18. It is calculated from 6 X 3. The six here is the second six of Sanseru. The three represents good, bad, and peace." And here are all my questions: If I'm correct, Higaonna Sensei studied with Kanbun Uechi under Zhou-Zi-He. If that's true, then is there a reason that Saifa, Seiyunchin, Shisochin, Sepai, and Kururnfa aren't a part of the Uechi-Ryu system? Are the five forementioned kata actually Pangainoon? Do the five bridging kata of Uechi-Ryu have any connection w/ those kata? Why is Superempai regarded as a lost kata of Pangainoon and the other five, not? IS Superempai Pangainoon, and considered a part of Uechi-Ryu today?

Thanks in advance, Mike.

Dear Sensei Mattson, I recently bought a reprint of your book, The Way of Karate, because I am interested in supplementing my rather eclectic, formal jujitsu training with the principles of Uechi-ryu Karate. As I expected, the book serves as a thorough and fascinating introduction to the style. Congratulations on your excellent authorship (though I know this message is 30+ years outdated). I am left with a few questions, however (and please forgive me if they sound elementary in nature). I have studied the (Sensei Miyagi's) Goju-ryu version of Sanchin, which, though similar in techniques, follows a more simple and shorter pattern. It also features deep breathing, like Uechi-ryu's version, but the whole kata is performed with muscular tension throughout the entire body continuously. Compared to the goals clearly outlined in your book for the training of Uechi-ryu Sanchin, why might Goju-ryu's version use such a method of dynamic tension? It seems to contradict the purpose of the kata in the Uechi-ryu style (i.e., hard and soft body mechanics). Any ideas why this might be? Second, to what does an Uechi-ryu karateka direct his attention while training Sanchin? Should I imagine an enemy in front of me as with most kata, concentrate on my breathing as in meditation, or focus on something else (the flow of ki, perhaps)? Third, does Sanchin training ever reach the point where a student learns bunkai for the form? Though you indicated that it didn't, I've heard conflicting opinions on the possible combat applications of the form. Is it a kihon training form, a combat form, or both? Or are the combat applications of Sanchin explored only through other kata (this was my impression from your book, though I would appreciate if you could confirm and clarify this point). I thank you in advance for your time in reading this letter, and would appreciate any response that could help guide my training along these lines of thought.

Best regards, Bill, from Chicago

Bill: There are many schools of thought on the subject of breathing in Uechi-ryu. I suggest you jump on one of our Forums and post your questions. I've published a video on the subject as well... VidMag 17, which is available at the Uechi Store. GEM

Dear Sir,

During the period of time from 1990 - 1991 in Fort Lauderdale, FL, I took Uechi-ryu from two instructors who were brothers named Bill and Bob, possibly William and Robert who were from Kalamazoo, MI. Bill was a black belt who studied with master "Cowmbomb" (sounds like) Uechi on the island of Okanawa (sp?). I wish I had more information and better spelling to give you, but if any of this makes sense would let me know how to contact these gentlemen. Also, have any Uechi-ryu dojos opened in the area of Jackson Mississippi?

I would appreciate any information you could provide me.

Sincerely, Brian Loughrige Former Student

Robert and Bill Keith operated dojo in Florida for many years. Bill is now in Michigan. I don't have any information on how to contact either of them. GEM

Dear George, Count me in for Tony Blauer's class on Sunday, it sounds interesting. I am currently teaching a very successful women's self -defense class at The Massachusetts College Of Liberal Arts and I would like to teach parts of this program at camp. It would be open to both Men and women and most are simple but very effective 1 and 2 step techniques.

Hello,

I am currently doing much research into Okinawan Karate and "hidden" and lost methods and I am very interested in your video "Superempei the lost kata..." but as I live in England is it possible for you to supply the tape in European PAL format, or is there a distributor of your tapes in my country?

Thank you,

Alan Wolfenden, 4th Dan, Ryukyu Kempo-Karate.

To both of your questions...Not at this time. But you might look up Simon Lailey, the person who discovered this form in Southern China. GEM

I NEED YOUR HELP. We are a Wado Ryu Karate club, (semi contact)Based in Staffordshire, UK. We enter several competitions each year with both our junior and senior members. A problem has arisen with one of our junior members. Charlotte is a nine year old girl with very bad eye sight. However, her parents have purchased some Rec Specs for her (Recommended by the national health authority for all sports), We have no problem with her using these in the club as we have listened to all the facts on these sports glasses. They are designed to withstand a squash ball at over one hundred miles an hour, top cricketers use them, Martial artists in America use them, indeed I saw a footballer wearing a pair in the European cup only last week on TV. The Rec specs lenses are designed to pop outwards under extreme pressure and the entire frame is designed to cushion any blow. Charlotte has trained with us for some time and often wears these specs in the club in order to see! We have NEVER had a problem with her safety or felt that any of her competitors have been put under any risk. Her parents have been told that she cannot wear contact lenses by her optician as her eyesight is so poor, she would not be able to get the first one in on her own!. We really do not have any problem with Charlotte wearing these glasses, and feel that if we stopped her wearing Recspecs, we would loose a young promising student. Also, I personally feel, that stopping her from wearing these sports glasses would most likely be an offence under the disabilities equal rights act. Over the last year, charlotte has entered several competitions. At most of these she has got changed, warmed up, got all exited, put on all her protective clothes, then walked onto the mat wearing her Rec specs, then all of a sudden she is surrounded by officials. The problem is, they have not been faced with these sports glasses before. In fact, one of the officials said, its not that I don't trust the glasses, I just don't want to be the first to let her wear them, he went on to say, When you have got another competition to let her wear them, then I will let her too. At the last competition Charlotte broke down in tears, She was yet again disqualified, the word disqualified to a nine year old means "I have done something wrong". Well, its not her fault. It really is ignorance. I intend to do everything in my power to help Charlotte win this battle. Charlotte is not the only one wearing these glasses, there are hundreds and thousands worldwide. The only reason she is having problems, is because we enter small local competitions and people just have not seen them before. Do you know anyone who wears these sports glasses? Or do you know anyone experiencing the same problems?. I need all the help I can get with this matter. Maybe this is just the first of many cases. It could be someone you know next time having the same problems. Even if you cant help, I would dearly love a small note of support, I can at least pass these on to Charlotte to show her she does have support and that I am Trying!. I hope you can help me in some way or form. I look forward to hearing from you. Yours Faithfully,

L Rogers (Club Secretary).

Dear Sensei George,

thank you for your response to my mail concerning registration for the camp.

I hope you have received our postcard from Malaysia. We had a very nice time in Asia.

Do you have a friend or do you know a Uechi-ryu student who would like to visit Bavaria and in particular Regensburg during August, September or October ? Since I will be in the US, he or she can use my 2-bedroom apartment. So if you know someone who is interested he is cordially invited to stay in my apartment while I am away.

The contact persons would be Wolfgang and Isolde Mages, the couple living with their two children in the same house. Both of them are speaking English and can provide help if necessary. Wolfgang is teaching molecular genetics at Regensburg University and he is also a Uechi-ryu beginner in our dojo.

If you know someone have him send an e-mail to: (contact gem for address)

Last Sunday Paul, Helmut and the rest of us have opened a new dojo near Regensburg (in a village called Pettendorf, which is Paul's home village). We did some demonstrations (kumite, kata) with a major focus on Sanchin kata and breathing. People were very interested. Paul, as the instructor in this new dojo, told something about the way of Uechi-ryu, giving major credits to his teachers, Bruce Hirabayashi, Bill Glasheen, and their master ---- Sensei George Mattson. The resonance was great and all participants from the Regensburg dojo will support Paul and Helmut in Uechi-ryu.

Best regards to you and Susan

Mr. Mattson, Good day, my name is Cory E. Bean. I am currently a green belt in the art of Uechi-ryu, under the instruction of Sensei David Goins, Sensei Elroy Weeks, Sensei Chris Levine, and Sensei Al Wharton.

I have notice the dramatic changes to the uechi-ryu website and I am very impressed with the layout. This is the first egroup I have joined on the internet and am looking forward to some of the new acquaintances I may make.

Have a good day, Cory.

hello there sensei! i was a student of uechi-ryu for some years now but i'm just a rokyu, getting ready for my green belt test. I am from the same community as sensei Maloney. i would like to learn all i can about uechi-ryu. It seems to be the only thing i can do, or the only thing that i like soo much of doing. i was a student of James hopper, Barry Porter and also Scott Taylor. Unfortunately our dojo could not keep up in it's rent for the building where it was located. It was the closest uechi dojo there is. i use to go to the dojo in a community called lantz but with the transportation we have it's not too reliable. I might be leaving my home community for a few years it's still undecided yet, but i was wondering if you knew where sensei Maloney teaches or if he teaches, or what part of Boston might there be a dojo. I was thinking of other karate form but i would very much like to finish with uechi-ryu even though there is no end to the practice of this form. Maybe i can ask you for sensei Maloney's e-mail if it isn't too much trouble.

P.S. it's been a pleasure writing to the bringer of uechi-ryu to America, and my e-mail is .......

thanx Jacob

Mattson Sensei;

Hello, I hope all is well.

I just wanted to drop a quick note and tell you that Takashi Kinjo has video's out by a company call Resources Unlimited. The video's are under the heading of Koburyu Kobukai, and an information link say's that Kinjo sensei has changed the name of his style from Konanryu Kobukai to Koburyu Kobukai.

Just thought you might find it interesting.

Greetings again, Sensei,

My name is Darcy McQuillan. Back in 1995, we met on-line when you joined the Cyberdojo. I was a music student at Acadia University, and also one of the original four or five Uechi members of the Cyberdojo at that time. We met in person for a short time a few months later at Dave Hunt's Karate tournament in Bedford, Nova Scotia, when I was training with Sensei Bub Pelham. I am now living in Red Deer, Alberta, and have not had the opportunity to study Uechi for the past few years, but an opportunity may exist with Sensei Neil Dunningan in Edmonton. I hope that the past few years have found you well; Uechi-ryu.com has indeed improved from it's humble beginnings! Also, congratulations on your last promotion- I don't think I have been in touch with you since.

. . . .
Anyway, I must run. I hope all is well, and take care. Darcy.

Dear Sensei! We are glad to congratulate you with your national holiday - the day of Independence. We know that it is important for you to celebrate this date and this holiday has it's own history - very beautiful and impressive. Our best wishes to you! Dear Mattson Sensei,

Thank you for the wonderful opportunity to host a White Crane Forum on the "Uechi-Ryu Martial Arts Forums" page. It is a great honor.

Enclosed is a logo (Jpeg Format) for the forum, nothing fancy or special, a little plain and basic (a lot like me!!!). I hope it will be okay.

Also enclosed below is a brief description of the forum and the name I feel best describes its aims. I trust this will be suitable.

Once again thank you for this opportunity.

Thanks, Sean Griffin

Dear Mattson Sensei and Susan,

A short note to say that we will miss seeing you this summer at Camp 2000. With Dan's work schedule, he was unable to get the time off. Both of the boys are disappointed that they will miss this special event and the super charge it gives them working and learning from the other instructors. Susan, I have not forgotten about sending back Sean's black belt. Right after we spoke, Sean experienced a very rare and serious injury/infection and we spent five weeks getting him back on his feet-literally. All is well and now we have to concentrate getting both the boys back into a dojo in the area. All the best with Camp 2000 and we will be with you in thought. Kathleen B. Sullivan

Dear Sensei Mattson,

A sixty-four-year-old man is sitting on a park bench, sobbing, when a young man walks by and asks him what's wrong.

Through his tears the old man answers, "I'm in love with a twenty-two-year-old woman."

"What's wrong with that?" asks the young man.

Between his sobs and sniffles, he answers, "You don't understand. Every morning before she goes to work, we make love. At lunchtime she comes home and we make love again, and then she makes my favorite meal. In the afternoon when she gets a break, she rushes home and gives it to me, the best an old man could want. And then at suppertime, and all night long, we make love."

He breaks down, no longer able to speak.

The young man puts his arm around him. "I don't understand. It sounds like you have the perfect relationship. Why are you crying?"

The senile old man answers, again through his tears, "I forgot where I live."
