Say hello.  Read what others have written.

Note: In the course of a month I get literally thousands of e-mail. I don't normally place correspondence in the "Mailbag" that are either labeled "personal" or contain information of a personal nature. As I read and answer mail, if I find a letter that I find interesting, amusing, topical or educational, it gets filed in my "mailbag" for future use in this feature. I try to edit out any personal information like addresses or telephone numbers, unless the writer specifically requests that I publish it.

I welcome all e-mail and will answer everyone in as timely a manner as possible. Don't be surprised if you find (or don't find) your message in this section. However, if you are concerned about your letter finding its way into the "Mailbag", simply include in the header or at the beginning of message "personal" and I will honor your request. GEM

Recently The Okinawa prefectural government gave recognition of cultural treasure to Shugoro Nakazato, Katsuya Miyahira, Ryuko Tomoyose, Joen Nakazato, Kosei Wakugawa(Gojuryu ) and Koshin Iha (Gojuryu) . The Rengokai is giving celebration party to Shugoro Nakazato, Katsuya Miyahira and Ryuko Tomoyose on 12th October at Grand casttle Hotel. We are expecting about six hundreds people to the party. Well, I will email you and let you know after Rengokai meeting.

Naturally the Uechi-ryu world is very proud to learn that Ryuko Tomoyose is receiving this high honor. Congratulations to all these deserving teachers. GEM

Hi George,

Just got back from New Zealand and was reading Bill's Round-Table while enjoying a cup of coffee and located the issue about Terry Dukes and wanted to share this.

Regards

Patrick --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi folks,

Interesting discussion. I too, questioned the validity of Terry Dukes research/background after I received a copy of his publication in 1994 from a colleague of mine in Japan.

I found no factual basis to the Kin, Itosu and Otomo "family" records but rather only conveniently fabricated innuendo. Discussing the issue with Terry O'Neill (FAI editor) in England no long thereafter, Terry mentioned that Harry Cook (writer) had a copy of a letter from the Uechi family (I think) dating back to the 60's indicating that Dukes had no connection with them.

Having visited Harry's place (in Sunderland, England) I read the said letter and received a photo copy of it (which I will look for and post to the list.) Later I wrote to Terry Dukes and asked several questions with regards to his sources and background. All I ever got back was a form to join his group!

Keep up the great work

Thanks for sharing your research with us Patrick. GEM

Greetings Sensei. I am a student of Sensei Fred Norris in St. Louis, MO. I have studied under him since 1981. He was trained in Kadena. I think it may have been around the same time you were there. I was wondering if you have ever encountered him in you travels. I think the site is great. I took a chance and put the Uechi name in the address box and was thrilled to see the site. Keep up the good work. Please reply to me at your earliest availability.

Sincerely,

David M. Conley

 ============

Hi David: I haven't seen or heard from Fred in many years. I heard he wasn't training any longer. I'll post your letter in the October mailbag (If you don't mind) and someone may know his whereabouts.
Best, George

Mattson Sensei,

I know exactly where he is. I talk to him everyday. I was just on your site and thought perhaps you knew him. He is training only a chosen few. He is really a remarkable man and has been the only father I have known. He and the Uechi-ryu caught me at a sort of crossroads when I was about 13 and has been instrumental in making me the person I am today. He is doing very well. Would you mind if I told him you said hello? That would be great. Thank you for your swift reply to my email. Maybe one day I can come and visit with you. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

David M. Conley

David: Please give Fred my best regards and tell him to start teaching again. Uechi-ryu need gifted instructors like him to get involved! GEM

I will tell him that. I think he is intending to become more active. We will just have to sit by the river on that one:) I would like to get this ring for him that I saw on,I believe it was, your site. Do you know what I'm talking about and can you help me find out how to get it. I haven't seen it on the site again.

Hello from sunny Brisbane, Australia

I an Australian author, and my fourth book has recently been published in the USA. Its hero holds a 2nd Dan Okinawan Karate blackbelt, wo from time to time in the plot, needs to put this knowledge to good use.

The book is entitled The Nine Pillars of Happiness, and is a major literary work of 444 pages. It bases its characters and principal theme on the Enneagram - a system over 1000 years old, and which, I believe, would benefit many martial arts students.

The novel is set in Florence, and is multi-layered in meaning, and is far more complex and meaningful than the trite martial arts movies. I say this because I often hear martial arts students talk of the 'spiritual' level of training they will receive from their dojo, then hear them complain that

it never comes to pass. I hope this novel will help bridge some of that

gap.

I wondered whether you would be kind enough to visit my site, click onto the links page and go to where you can read the first five chapters free. I would be interested in your views, as a martial arts professional. Here's the link:

http://www.uq.net.au/~zziozzi/

I realize you may not have time, and that's okay. As I enjoyed your site, I decided to extend the same professional courtesy.

Best wishes

Hi. I am not sure if I am in the right place. We are moving from the Berkshires in MA to Dutchess Co..... NY. I will need a new Uechi-Ryu school for my two children. Could you help me with this or direct me to a place that can help. Thank you in advance for any help you can give us. Nancy

Dear Mr. Mattson,

I have recently joined a UECHIRYU KARATE DOJO, In Chelmsford MA. My new Sensei allowed me to borrow his copy of your book UECHIRYU KARATE DO (sixth printing 1993). I have been trying to find a copy of the book for my self to study from, I've had very little luck. I would like to ask you if the book is still in print, available through the dojo or should i keep looking in the used book stores for it. I would like to thank you in advance for your time in this matter and bid you a good.

David Burk

The book (and lots of other Uechi items) can be found at the Uechi Store. http://karateworld.safeshopper.com/ GEM

Sensei George, I wish I had more time to go to all the forums, and read everything, but I have to leave a little time in my day to work out.

Speaking of which I am visiting Rome from Sep. 26 to Oct. 6, and I was hoping that I might be able to find some other Uechi practitioners there. I would appreciate any info that you or anyone else might send my way at SDREHOBL@CS.COM I think that we will be bringing along some kind of portable computer, and will be able to watch our e-mail, while we are there.

Also, I would welcome anyone who finds themselves in the Philadelphia area to come in and work out at the Dojo in Collegeville. Just send me an e-mail.

Respectfully Yours,

Steve Drehobl, Collegeville, PA (610) 454-1230

PS. could you update the instructor listing to show the above e-mail and phone? Thanks again.

Hello Mr. Mattson,

My name is Jeremiah Lauriat and I have studied Uechi-Ryu for almost 8 1/2 years under Sensei Daniel Dovidio. I have achieved the rank of Nidan and this November I will be testing for my Sandan. As the time grows near, I recall that at my Nidan test, there were a lot of questions, mostly history related, that I did not have the answers to. I do not own a copy of the Uechi-Ryu book and the information I possess on these and all topics is quite limited. I was hoping you could direct me to a portion of the Uechi-Ryu website that may contain the information I am searching for. Thank you so very much to take the time to read this, Take care,

Sincerely, Jeremiah

Visit the UVA website (find it on the Links section) to learn everything you will need to know for your dantest. Good luck. GEM

 Hi George Sensei,

Thanks for the great right up on the web.

Just one thing to clarify if you feel you have the time, We took 1st/ 2nd/ & 3rd in Kata not Kumite, with Me in 1st place, as you know, Vladimir Fookson in 2nd place & Jason Staccio taking 3rd in both Kata and Kumite.

Dan Kumite 1st with Vladimir and myself as you correctly posted.

With thanks,

Fedele

Sorry for the mistake Fedele. Congratulations again to all the winners of Manny Neve's and Raffi Derderian's tournaments. GEM

George Sensei- I have been requested to look into setting up a China trip to look into the Oki/Fuzhou historical background. You may or may not have caught wind of the project, but I would appreciate your input. The tour guide would be an experienced China hand with Chen Tai Ji family associations. Could you recommend a contact in the Fuzhou martial arts community? Any advice on your part would be appreciated! (I really haven't yet recovered from this last trip yet, and we never even got to Fuzhou...) I really don't want to bite off more than I can chew on a initial trip. Best regards, and thanks in advance Say Hi to Susan for me Bill Jackson

Sensei George,

I went to a Wu (Northern Bejing style of the Quan-Yu lineage) style Tai Chi push hands seminar in Princeton this last weekend. The seminar was excellent. Many of the counters were interesting and very useful. My one observation is that the counters were all movements from San Chin. The types of movements are:

1. San Chin arm strikes used to counter and efficiently deflect either an incoming strike or a hook to the elbow 2. Wauke blocks for locking and counters to them using San Chin arm strikes 3. Some rotational movements for a counter to a push that is in progress that looked just like some stuff from the last three movements of SanChin embedded with a wauke 4. A counter that looked very much like the San Chin double thrusts when one's elbows are pinned by an incoming push

The material in this seminar is considered intermediate/advanced level for push hands. It is VERY interesting that this appears to contain many of the elements of Uechi-ryu San Chin practice.

BTW - in my analysis of basic push hands (and we were told to do this every day in order to gain the sensitivity and relaxation necessary to execute the stuff in the seminar cleanly without telegraphing the moves), the basic one hand push hand is really a variation of the San Chin arm thrust! Also, the two handed basic push hands retains many of the elements of the wauke block and some variations of the San Chin arm thrust!

This is fascinating stuff! As I think about this, I am also reminded about the statement that Kanbum Uechi made, "All is in San Chin...."

Sensei, thank you for getting back to me with the phone number of John Spencer. He seems like a real nice person. His location listed originally in Colchester, CT (20 minutes from my residence) has changed to Willamantic approximately 70 minutes away. This commute is unfortunately unrealistic for sustained training. When and if you get the chance could you please check your files to see if you know of any other black belts down in this location of Old Lyme, CT, on the S.E. coast who would be interested in giving private lessons and forward this information to me. Also, please send my regards to Nancy Gavenda if you should make contact with her.

Thank you very much for all of your assistance and I do enjoy re-reading your texts. Sincerely, Kenneth L. Green

CARLOS

More from Carlos:

AT THE BEGINNING IS DIFFICULT TO APPLY POWER ON THE SEISAN HIDDEN KICK. IT MAY BE BECAUSE ONE LEG IS LEANING ON THE FLOOR, THE POWER COMES OFF THE HIP SINCE IT CANNOT GATHER STRENGTH FROM THE FLOOR. THIS MAY PRODUCE THE PHYSICAL EXPLANATION OF THE CHI EXPLOSION WHILE EXECUTING THE KICK. I AM SAYING THIS BECAUSE AFTER MANY DAILY PRACTICES, A COUPLE OF DAYS AGO, I BEGAN TO FEEL THE STRENGTH OF THE KICK; AND AFTER IT, I FEEL LIKE A TRAIN FLYING FORWARD. ITS INCREDIBLE HOW THE JUMP INCREASES ITS POWER IT THE LAST SEISAN ATTACK. YOUR CONCEPTS OF MAXIMUM EXPLOSIVE POWER HAVE HELPED ME REALIZE THIS. WITHOUT THEM IT WOULD HAVE BEEN IMPOSSIBLE. Un abrazo Carlos.

CARLOS: I SEE A CONFLICT IN FOCUSING IN THE TORQUE TO INCREASE THE MAXIMUM EXPLOSSIVE POWER WHILE TRAYING TO KICK IN THE AIR AT THE SAME TIME. >PERHAPS WITH MORE PRACTICE WHEN THE TORQUE BECOMES SECOND NATURE?

I WANT TO SHARE WITH YOU SOMETHING THAT I THINK IS IMPORTANT FOR KATA >SEISAN

AT SUMMER CAMP, IT GOT MY ATTENTION BILL GLASHEN'S PEOPLE PERFORMING KATA SEISAN WITH A SHOMEN GERI UP IN THE AIR AFTER THE JUMP BACKWARDS AND AFTER JUMPING FORWARD PERFORMING THE HIJI, URAKEN TSUKI, SHOKEN TSUKI.

IT GOT MY ATTENTION BECAUSE IN THAT SPANISH NEWSLETTER THAT I MENTION AT SUMMER CAMP, WHERE KANMEI WAS REMEMBERING HIS FATHER, HE SAID THAT KANBUM PERFORMED A FRONT KICK SO FAST DURING KATA SEISAN THAT NOBODY COULD SEE IT. IN THAT NESLETTER ARTICLE KANMEI CONFIRMED THAT INDEED KANBUM DID EXECUTE THE UNSEEN KICK. AFTER SEEING BILL'S PEOPLE PERFORM THAT TECHNIQUE, I DECIDED TO EXPERIMENT IT. I HAVE BEEN PRACTICING SINCE MY RETURN ONE HOUR DAILY, EARLY IN THE MORNING TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE FULL BODY ENERGY. HERE ARE MY CONCLUSIONS:

1. performing the front kick, helps greatly to keep balance when on one leg.

2. after practicing for a while, the kick is much more potent in the air than >the regular shomen geri launched from the floor.

3. The forward jump increases in its projection forward. You really feel the >power flying forward.

4 the last techniques (hiji, uraken and shsoken) gain 10 times its power. I DO NOT KNOW IF YOU HAVE EXPERIMENTED THIS. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW YOUR >THOUGHTS ON THIS AND IF YOU COULD KINDLY LET ME KNOW. SINCE KATAS ARE PARAMOUNT TO ME.

Hello Sensei!

I have had the privilege of meeting you during your trips to Vancouver to do seminars. I have trained with Mike Dunphy and later with Mark. Yet, law school has enticed my travels to the other side of Canada now so I am hoping that you would be kind enough to tell me where there is a dojo in Toronto. I am going to school at Queens University in Kingston which is two hours away from Toronto, yet, I imagine I will be doing some trips to Toronto as my Mom lives there. If by chance you know of anyone who is in the Kingston area, and who would like to train, I would be thrilled. You never know....pleasant surprises can coordinate!! Thank You! for your time and I look forward to crossing paths with you sometime soon. Jill Prenger (jill_eagle@hotmail.com)

This is a message to notify you of my upcoming tournament on November 11 in Battle Creek, MI. Sorry for the late notice, but we have only just finalized the agreement for the tournament venue at the Naval/Marine Reserve Center so that we will be able to have weapons divisions (here in Battle Creek we have had problems with the schools over the word "weapons"). Please respond with your mailing addresses so that I can update my mailing list. Feel free to send the address of anyone you know who may be interested in this tournament as well.

Sincereley, John VanDeLaare GoDan, Uechi-ryu

Hi George, I noticed a note from Jim Robinson in the mailbag... Is it Jim Robinson from Fort Kent, ME? I have been trying for a very long time to find his email address. I would be greatful if you would provide it to me or provide him with mine... sensei@drp-ca.com

This awesome picture was taken in the Bitterroot National Forest in Montana on August 6, 2000 by a fire behavior analyst from Fairbanks, Alaska by the name of John McColgan with a Digital camera. Since he was working while he took the picture, he cannot sell or profit from it so he should at least be recognized as the photographer of this once in a lifetime shot. THIS PICTURE IS INCREDIBLE!

Howdy ya'll, I recently got permission to hold shoot wrestling tournaments here in wichita kansas, however one of the stipulations is that I have insurance that states that the city of wichita is not liable and that covers the competitors, do you have any suggestions? Dear Sensei Mattson
Thank you for the information . . . Just to let you know a little bit about myself, I am 29 Y/O and I live in a small town called Paisley, just ten miles west of Glasgow, Scotland (Gt Britain). I am a Shotokan practitioner (12 years) but I am interested in the evolution and history of all karate styles. To say that I am interested in Uechi karate would be the understatement of the millennium, I have fallen hook, line and sinker for this beautiful, dynamic style of karate. Watching Kanei Sensei, Seiko Toyama Sensei, Seiyu, Kiyohide and Narahiro Shinjo Sensei, yourself and Alan Dollar Sensei, Tsutomu Nakahodo Sensei to name only a few is inspirational to say the least. I am really desperate to get my hands on the Wakayama tape for historical reasons and I will be posting some questions to Glasheen Sensei once I have seen it.

I have amassed quite a collection of books, videos and magazine articles from various sources about Uechi-Ryu, as well as being a regular visitor to your on-line magazine and a member of Patrick McCarthys International Ryu Kyu Research Society. All of this only whetted my appetite for more and I contacted Sensei Dave Scott in Liverpool, England about training with him. Unfortunately Sensei Scott is quite some drive from where I live so he put me in touch with his friend Sensei Harry Cook (a well known karate historian and instructor) who lives a bit closer. This was in February this year, but the more I trained with Sensei Cook the more I wanted to make the long drive to Liverpool and train with Sensei Scott. Just to let you know that I phoned Sensei Scott tonight but unfortunately he is busy until next week. He put me in contact with Sensei Steve McNally of the Liverpool dojo and as I find myself with Thursday and Friday off work this week I will give you three guesses where I am going (and the first two do not count). I would like to thank you Sensei Mattson, your videos, books and articles (particularly my own personnel favorite in Bugeisha: The Evolution of Traditional Karate) are never far from hand when I am researching karate in general. I will give you a quick e-mail later on in the week to let you know how I get on. (it is my surprise 30th birthday party on Friday night so I better make it back on time for that)
Thank you for your time
John Cairney

 =========

Many thanks for the letter John. You sound like a very dedicated martial artist. Keep up the good work and stay in touch. I'll include with your purchase a gift of another tape which I hope you will enjoy.
Best,
George Mattson

 =======

 Dear Sensei Mattson

Thank you very much for your kind words and your even kinder gesture of the video.

I made the 240 mile trip down to Liverpool on Thursday and I had a most enjoyable and enlightening training session with the Uechi people there. They were very friendly and courteous, of a very high standard and were delighted that I had shown such an interest in there style. I have made many new friends and they insisted that the next time I travel down I must stay overnight.

Once again many thanks to you and the many others that I mentioned in my last post, it is due to you and these others that I managed to get through this class without looking to much out of place. Indeed it is to your credit that Sensei Steve McNally was impressed with what I already knew. (although there was some much needed correction on the night)

Yours Sincerely

John Cairney

Sensei,Hi George, I thought you might like some pictures that I took at the summer camp. I was teaching the kids how to make rope. Rope is made of three strands twisted together. We used plastic "gimp" for the strands. Each student selected a color of gimp to put into the rope. It produced quite a colorful piece of work. The kids had to work together as a team. Some took turns twisting the rope by practicing their circle blocks on the twisting machine. some took turns holding the far end of the rope and keeping it untangled. the final twisting of the strands together was pretty cool, and everyone seemed to want to get in on that. Once the rope was finished, it was about 25 feet long and we practiced an ancient warrior training method, where the rope is used in place of live weapons and each student had to face the challenge of holding their ground while not getting any part of their body "cut off" by the weapons (rope). To the untrained observer, this exercise looked very similar to a game that some of the kids were already familiar with. I think they might call it 'jump rope'. Anyway when our time together on this exercise came to a close, I knotted the rope and cut it into sections for each student to take with them, (this made for automatic clean-up).

So many philosophical points can be made using a piece of rope as an analogy. The entire rope is weakest at its weakest point. Every strand in the rope is as important as any other- every student is as important as any other. Perhaps there are some other good analogies. Let me know if you come up with others. Respectfully, Steve Drehobl, Uechi Ryu Karate Academy, Collegeville, PA 610-454-1230

Here are a couple more photos from the summer camp in August 2000.I thought you might like them.

Sensei Just a short note to let you know that the address of your sole (..unfortunately..) Uechi "instructor" om Poland has changed to:

PS Although, I am not active as an instructor at the moment, I do welcome enquiries from anyone interested in Uechi. I am still searching for other Uechi practitioners in Poland. Perhaps you have heard about some Uechi "expats" in the Land of Chopin and Vodka? I had the pleasure to be in Toronto this summer and get guidance from David Mott, if you do see him anytime please send him my warmest greetings.

Whoever decided to create this note and forward it on should receive some type of humanitarian award. It says it all!

1. Big companies don't do business via chain letters. Bill Gates is not giving you $1000, and Disney is not giving you a free vacation. There is no baby food company issuing class-action checks. Proctor and Gamble is not part of a satanic cult or scheme, and its logo is not satanic. MTV will not give you backstage passes if you forward something to the most people.

2. There is no kidney theft ring in New Orleans. No one is waking up in a bathtub full of ice, even if a friend of a friend swears it happened to their cousin. If you are hell-bent on believing the kidney-theft ring stories, see: http://urbanlegends.tqn.com/library/weekly/aa062997.htm   And I quote: "The National Kidney Foundation has repeatedly issued  requests for actual victims of organ thieves to come forward and tell  their stories." None have. That's "none" as in "zero." Not even your > friend's cousin.

3. Neiman Marcus doesn't really sell a $200 cookie recipe. And even if they do, we all have it. And even if you don't, you can get a copy at:  http://www.bl.net/forwards/cookie.html  Then, if you make the recipe &  decide the cookies are that awesome, feel free to pass the recipe on.

 4. If the latest NASA rocket disaster(s) DID contain plutonium that went  to particulate over the eastern seaboard, do you REALLY think this information would reach the public via an AOL chain letter?

5. There is no "Good Times" virus. In fact, you should never, ever, ever forward any e-mail containing any virus warning unless you first confirm that an actual site of an actual company that actually deals with viruses. Try: http://www.norton.com and forwardit. We don't care. And you cannot  get a virus from a flashing e-mail, you have to download .... ya know, like, a FILE There is no gang initiation plot to murder any motorist who flashes headlights at another car driving at night without lights.  you're  using Outlook, IE, or Netscape to write e-mail, turn off HTML encoding. Those of us on Unix shells can't read it, and don't care enough to save the attachment and then view it with a web browser since you're probably forwarding us copy of the Neiman Marcus Cookie Recipe anyway. you still absolutely MUST forward that 10th-generation message from friend, at least have the decency to trim the eight miles of e headers e showing everyone else who's received it over the last 20 months.

They ask for you to donate money, they don't give it,  as  if they could know how many e-mails you sent out ... sheesh.

14. KFC really does use real chickens with feathers and beaks and feet. No, they really do. Why did they change their name? In this health conscious world, what was KFC's name? Kentucky FRIED Chicken. FRIED is not healthy. So with the help of a focus group, they changed the name to KFC. It's short, doesn't offend dieters, and it's easy to remember.

15. Another thing, just because someone said in a message, four generations back, that "we checked it out and it's legit," does not actually make it true. PS: There is no bill pending before Congress that will allow long > distance companies to charge you for using the Internet. Bottom Line ... composing e-mail or posting something on the Net is as > easy as writing on the walls of a public restroom. Don't automatically believe it until it's proven false ...ASSUME it's false, unless there is proof that it's true.

Now forward this to everyone you know or the program I just put on your hard drive while you read this E-mail will open up your CD-ROM and reach out and slap you upside the head!
