Generating Power in Uechi-ryu

Suggestions for Generating Power in Uechi-ryu

Understand the nature of force: Li is muscular and is observable as effort. Chi is a metaphor for our naturally occurring and flowing energy. Jin is the expression of power which is the result of optimal channeling of chi, by direction of the will. Visualize, and it will happen, if your mind and body are relaxed. Through relaxation and resilience, one can generate internal power by optimum vector of forces. Internal power appears as an unexpectedly robust manifestation of force, especially considering the minimum apparent effort. With Li, the point of contact is itself the target. However, when a target is hit with Jin, the energy passes though and causes internal disruption. On a basic level: Hit through, not to.

New dates for Karate Championship Series

Hi to all Uechi-ryu students and teachers:
Hope all is well and your training strong.  Just a quick note to inform you of our 2011 Uechi-Ryu Karate Championship Series.  We had a great time last year and we hope to improve this year.  We’ve done much to insure fairness and consideration to all competing.  Please download our application from the attachment above.  If you would prefer, please write me back with your dojo name and address and I will mail you a poster and the amount of applications needed.

This is one event where all different association are welcome and come together as one united Uechi Family.  All 3 of the promoters are of different organizations but encourage the same goal of unity.  Those with misguided, elitist attitudes and false claims of superiority has not been invited.

WinterFest 2011

What a great time everyone had, including me! Seminars went off without any problems other than the weather not fully cooperating. Mornings were too cold for outdoor classes so we decided to go indoors both days. A few hardy youngsters stayed on the field Saturday morning and wanted to compete in the FireDragon Challenge in spite of the near freezing temperatures. Many thanks to FireDragon coach Jim Baggett, for staying on the field and putting the kids through their paces. Thanks to everyone who participated in this year’s Martial Art Fest and special thanks to Shihan Tom Bentley and his very talented student, Keith Sanders, for conducting a fascinating three hour session involving partner drills focusing on the many uses of “Tai-sabaki”

Top Cop at WinterFest!

No question about it, when Roy Bedard shows up for camp, everyone gets excited. His seminars have captivated audiences since he called me one day many years ago and asked if he could participate in SummerFest! During one break during the Friday session, he demonstrated to a group of seniors how he could tweek their noses from six feet away with a powerful punch and he would give anyone ten bucks who could touch his arm with a defensive movement. Hmmm. . . sounds like an easy ten bucks. . . But no one collected that day and I know because I was one of the seniors who tried!

The next thing we knew, Roy was teaching a sport sparring class, using some of his winning techniques for targeting, evading and destroying opponents in the ring. From that year on, Roy has been on both the Summer and WinterFest schedules.

God just inherited a party

My Dearest Vicki,

I remember Summer Camp nights where I would be exhausted. You on the other hand… The Energizer Bunny went out with friends to the famous Bourne “biker bar.” It was your time to be all you with friends who would protect you and look out after you, but let you shine like only you could.

Tonight a biker bar in Bourne is playing a song – in your honor.

Prince 1999

I was dreamin’ when I wrote this
So sue me if I go 2 fast

But life is just a party
And parties weren’t meant 2 last

War is all around us
My mind says prepare 2 fight

So if I gotta die
I’m gonna listen 2 my body tonight

Yeah, they say two thousand zero zero party over
Oops out of time
So tonight I’m gonna party like it’s 1999

It is you, my dear friend. Somewhere in heaven, God just inherited a party.

– Bill

A True Warrior Has Passed

I am announcing to the world that a true warrior has passed. Herman Yee passed away around 9am Wednesday, January 12, 2011. These last few years of battling his illnesses have finally overcome him. The warrior that he is, Herman fought to the very end. Strangely enough, Herman’s fight was not for himself but for all who loved him.

During the early 1970s when Mattson Academy fighters was the ones you need to get passed to hope for a chance at a championship, Herman was one of those feared obstacles. As a fighter, he was a tough, resilient, relentless and possesses more skill and ability then one would imagine.

All of us who really know Herman understand him as a reserved, selfless individual who would rather give then take. There are many who benefited from his generosity and offered back nothing but grieves and didn’t give him the time of day. Herman’s remark was “The truth of a man is reveal by his actions. Enough said”.

Unlike much of the fables going around the internet about “fighting in the street” to booster ones imaginary image, Herman Yee who mentioned nothing was one of the few who actually practiced much of our training in the streets of the South End, downtown Washington Street and Chinatown. Fighting alongside Herman, I knew there was always someone watching my back.

Those of you who never met Herman Yee and do not know of him, Herman was a man of honor, respect, integrity, strength and most of all compassion. He began his training of Uechi-Ryu in 1969 along with many of his friends from the South End. He continued training until a year ago when his health did not permit him to do so. We will miss him.

The brothers from birth are circumstantial. There will always be a connection. Our brothers through friendship are by choice.

Masters Magazine Announcement

Sent: Monday, January 17, 2011 7:58 AM
To: George
Subject: MAGAZINE and BOOK

Dear Sensei, your article is printed. We have copies next week and also the full interview just been printed in KARATE MASTERS Vol. 4 Please give an address to send you some copies!
Warmest regards!
Hi Jose:
My students have been “bugging” Books a Million for the past few weeks and were standing in line yesterday when the store assured them that the new issue would be on the shelves. I even got excited and drove over to purchase what I believe was their last copy!

You did a great job with the grizzly-old-man pictures you had to work with. Hopefully some of your readers will appreciate my view of traditional MA and will understand how important steady and healthful training is in what many of us practice and love.

Again, thanks Jose.
