New event for 2012 SummerFest

by George Mattson

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT FROM IUKF

A NEW EVENT WILL BE ESTABLISHED FOR THE 2012 SUMMER FEST: SYNCHRONIZED KATA COMPETITION

In an effort to allow our Uechi members the opportunity to display their technique and form, IUKF will sponsor this competition to any Uechi-Ryu dojo, or related Uechi-Ryu family of styles, to compete in this event. IUKF membership is not required.

Teams must consist of 3 to 5 members and perform a kata of their choosing, higher than Sanchin. (Sanchin kata not permitted). The Teams members must also be individually registered for the Summer Fest, either as a Full Program Registrant, or Day Tripper.

There will be two classes of entries: Adult team members, age 17 or older, and children under 17. Both classes must perform their kata before a panel of Judges for an elimination round on Friday evening, (date to be determined). Three teams will be selected to compete in the Finals at the Masters Ceremony on Saturday evening. Those three Teams will be competing for First, Second and Third. Awards presented to each team member.

There is no minimum Rank requirement. However, the kata performed, must be within their level of rank. For example, a Green Belt cannot perform Sanseiryu.

Judging Panel will use a 100 point scoring system and will evaluate the kata performed using the following criteria:  KATA WAZA

1. Kata has to be alive
2. Kata has to exhibit Kime (energy, force, power)
3. Kata execution must be done with appropriate tension and relaxation
4. Correct timing of fast and slow
5. Must adhere to proper breathing
6. Overall balance of breathing, force, speed, center line focus
7. And of course, synchronization beginning and ending. Timing together

Each Team will be permitted to perform their kata two times, and keeping their best score. So everyone will get two chances to compete each elimination round. Friday evening will end with the three final teams. Saturday evening finals, will only allow ONE performance of their kata. A Team Leader (optional) will be permitted who will call the team to attention and order them to begin. No further cadence will be permitted. This Leader will not be counted in the 3 to 5 person limit. They will not perform. If necessary, a 2 minute time limit will be imposed for each kata.
