Please Post: Open letter to all Uechi-ryu
Students and Teachers
From: George E. Mattson
On Saturday, May 21, 2001, our association will sponsor the sixth Uechi-ryu Karate
Championships. This tournament is sanctioned by the Uechi Family and the Uechi-ryu Karate
Association of Okinawa and conducted in conjunction with the New England Open National
Karate Championships. I would very much appreciate your support and participation in this
event.
We have learned from our first five tournaments. Our officials have been trained and will
quickly and impartially enforce the rules. Please review the following rules summary and
the Complete Rules Guide. Check the Uechi On-Line Magazine for up-to-the-minute updates.
The purpose of the tournament is to provide a test for the complete Uechi-ryu student.
Kata and pre-arranged kumite are of equal importance to the freefighting. Hopefully you
will enter all three divisions. A "World Champion" Trophy will be awarded to the
men's Black Belt Free Fighting Grand Champion, the adult Black Belt Kata Champion and to
the best adult Dan Kumite team. In addition to the official rules, competitors will
be judged on:
1. Overall Sanchin/Uechi attitude: The calm spirit in which a competitor performs
during the match.
2. Demonstrating even tempered control while executing accurate and effective Uechi
techniques. Referees will be trained to stop the match for any out of control situation
where either competitor is in danger.
3. Absolute respect for officials and fellow competitor will be rule
one!
Our goal is to provide a safe and enjoyable way to compete, using standards of
Uechi-ryu that should be part of every dojo. Every competitor should feel good about
competing in a safe and friendly environment, regardless of the outcome of a match. The
object is participating and doing your very best, with the final reward of having learned
something unavailable anywhere else. Standard foam head, foot & hand equipment and
groin protection (for males) and a mouthpiece will be required in all fighting divisions.
All children's fighting divisions: Please

Sincerely,
George E. Mattson
