Dear Sensei Mattson,
I enjoyed surfing your homepage and was curious as to whether you list other martial art homepages.
If you do, the organization I am affiliated with is Kanzen Gojuryu and it's official homepage is:
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/SanseiDojo/
I'd be happy to return the favor of linking your page -- as the ultimate goal is to increase traffic to both our pages. Since Goju-Ryu is so closely related to Uechi-Ryu, I thought you might consider it.
Thank you for your consideration.
Kindest Regards,
Adam Dictrow Kanzen Gojuryu Karatedo
You must have missed the "Hotlinks"
site. Quite a few non-Uechi sites are included. I'll
be very happy to include yours. GEM

Dear George,
The information you obtained from the World Uechi Tournament
may be a little incorrect. the winners of the Dan Kumite
competition were: Randy Godin and Scott Thivierge. I don't know
if its too late to change the site or we will have to start
calling Scott, Gerry! Just joking. Email you soon.

Sorry about the mixup. The tournament site has been

Mr. Mattson: I have been reading your book Uechiryu Karate Do
and have found it very interesting. It is the best book I have
found to learn karate. I am writing to you today in hope of
obtaining additional Uechiryu material such as publications,
video tapes, or monthly newsletters. Besides obtaining
information on how to join the Uechiryu Karate Association: North
American Chapter, I am interested in obtaining information on how
to best learn this material at home. I am also interested in
obtaining a list of instructors and dojo in my area that I can
consult to continue learning Uechi-ryu karate. Cordially, John A.
Rose, Jr. [Zieglerville, PA]
I've sent you a listing of dojo in your area, along with a
Peabody Publishing Co. product listing. The only way to really
learn karate is with a teacher. Books and video tapes are a great
supplement to your training, but cannot replace a teacher. I
thank you for wanting to join NAC, but only dojo can join this
organization. Students are members automatically, through their
dojo. GEM

Thank you for your note Sensei Mattson. I will check out the dojo listing for a dojo in the area of BC I am going to.
I will be in BC on vacation with my wife during the Summer Camp. The camp program sounds excellent and there has been much interest/talk around my dojo about the camp, I am already missing not being able to attend. Maybe next year.
>Where do you study?
I can trace my "lineage" directly to you, through Sensei Maloney, who taught my teacher Duncan MacLeod. I study at Sensei Macleod's dojo in Truro, Nova Scotia. The seed that was planted when Sensei Maloney came back from Boston has certainly grown in Nova Scotia.
I have enjoyed your web page very much and have been sharing the information with others at my dojo. Will there be additional Dave Mott articles posted?
Thank you
Bob Christianson
We will miss you at camp as well. Hope you have a great vacation. Watch for more Dave Mott articles in the near future. GEM

Hello Sensei Mattson. Please excuse this question if you have
already answered it. If not, can you tell me how many Uechi-ryu
students (all levels) there are in the U.S? I heard the quantity
of 10,000 but thought that was too high. Can you help? Best

I believe there are quite a few more! There are probably 5000 in New England alone! GEM

It is a gift that I am honoered to give you. I'm sorry it has taken so long to send. I want to thank you George for all the effort you put into keeping people informed on your web page! I have been attempting to place an order, but it seems that all of the listed books, videos, etc., only have the first packet of data sent, and then nothing further. At any rate, if you are able to help me, I wish to purchase two copies of the book(I have tried for years, but all bookstores tell me it is out of print. I would also appreciate any help in finding a directory of any Uechiryu dojo in the Los Angeles area. Thank you very much.

Hello Mattson Sensei,
I've just returned home from my trip to Chile and Argentina and am very busy organizing Onaga sensei and Senaha sensei's visit.
Thank you for the invitation to your summer camp this year. Unfortunately as I mentioned in Ottawa I don't think it will be possible this summer, sorry!! :(
Although I can't go I do have a few questions about some of the events taking place at your camp.
I showed the brochure to Nick (the Hung Gar instructor I share my Dojo with) and he asked me if I could inquire regarding the guests you are having from Fukien.
Who is it that will be attend from Fukien and what type of lion dance will they be teaching? Also Nick asked if you could pass on a quick hello to Simon from him, as you obviously keep in touch with Simon a lot more than he does. That's all for now I'll send you a quick note when I have more details about what is happening here in Vancouver this summer. In the mean time I'm not sure if you've seem the web-site for the seminar please visit http://www.to-de.com/obk/seminar/seminar.htm
Bye for now, respectfully
Dan :)
Sorry that you won't be able to attend this year. I will tell Simon that Nick said hello. I wasn't aware there were different types of "Lion" dances, but will try to find out next time I talk with the group leader in New York. Kimo Wall called me yesterday to confirm his arrival date in August. He also was very happy to tell me he was travelling with a very famous "White Crane" teacher from Fuzhou who has never been outside of China before and who will be attending the Summer Camp this August with Kimo. Dear Sensei Mattson, This letter is in regards to a huge, new book that has just come out that is extremely informative as well as inspirational (in my humble opinion). I beleive that it will redefine how we in the English speaking world will define Uechi-ryu.
Sensei Alan Dollar has just published his new book, SECRETS OF UECHI RYU KARATE AND THE MYSTERIES OF OKINAWA. With its many hundreds of old pictures of the originators of Uechi-ryu and accompanying text describing those origins, I am not sure that any karateka with training based on the art of Kanbun Uechi wouldn't want to see where this all came from.... but more importantly, where he or she might be going. There are also excellent pictures of both individual waza and kata, again with accompanying text and description.
Certainly, I am biased. As a fellow Kadena student, I am definitely extremely pleased to see the old pictures of the Shinjo family, the current pictures of Kiyohide and Naruhiro Shinjo performing kata and waza. However, the thrust of the book is the Uechi system as taught in Wakayama and brought back to Okinawa, chronicling its history and development. I think Sensei Dollar has done a wonderful job of writing for all of us with our roots in Okinawa.
Sensei Dollar has not asked me to write this, nor does he know of it. Lest we forget what this activity that we do is all about...... I highly recommend this book.
I would like to say also, that my enthusiasm for this book in no way detracts from my respect and appreciation for other English language books on Uechi-ryu. I have gained great help and insight from all.
Sincerely, John Ray Sensei Dollar's e-mail address is: CherokeeCo@aol.com His address is:1001 Fitzuren Road/ Antioch CA 94509 Phone: (510) 778-4400 Fax:(510) 778-4468
Pleased to hear that Alan's book has been published. I sent him an email, congratulating him and asking him to send me information on the book, which I'll make available to our readers. GEM

Hello Mr. Mattson.
I will be sending my application and money shortly, but I just
had a few questions. My sister is thinking about coming along,
but she trains in Wado Ryu karate and Kobudo. She is not
interested in the Uechi Ryu aspects of the camp. Is this camp
strictly for Uechi Ryu practitioners, or are there enough
seminars that have nothing to do with Uechi Ryu to keep her busy.
The other question is, what are the accomodations like. Is it 2
or 3 to a room, or is it large rooms with bunkbeds, or is it
tenting? What are the bathroom and shower arrangements? For the
Iaido class put on by Mr. John Ray, what should I bring? Either a
bokken or katana, or both?
Finally, with Mr. Kammei Uechi coming, should I avoid wearing my
Gi with the Oki Ku Kai crest. I realize that there may be some
tension between the organizations in Okinawa, and I am quite
willing to bring just a plain white Gi for the camp. It makes no
difference to me.
Thx.
Michael Ham
Ontario, Canada
Your sister should have lots of activities and seminars to
keep her busy. Check out the Summer Camp page for some of the
many seminars being offered that are not Uechi-ryu. Everything
from Fuzhou Lion Dance to the healing arts. We will be staying in
dormatory buildings, two to a room. Men's and women's bathrooms
are on different floors. Wear your association crest proudly! We
judge you by your attitude, friendliness and openmindedness, not
by your crest! GEM

Dear Sensei Mattson,
I wanted to write about something that happened to me recently
that has really affected me in a positive way. People who know
me, know that my martial arts training and teaching revolves
around Budo first, and the particular styles I train second
(Uechi-ryu and Nihon Jujitsu). I spend all my time in the dojo
trying to convey the principles of Budo to my students so that
they will, in turn, teach them to their students. With any luck,
they will also apply these concepts in their everyday life.
Anyway, thanks to the wonder of E-mail, I was able to get in
touch with a person living on Okinawa, Japan who trained the same
style. I will not mention his name as I am not sure if he would
like it spread around. Having neither the time or money to go to
Okinawa (although it is one of my future goals), it was a godsend
to find someone who is on the pulse of what is happening right
now with the art and people in it. We have since spent countless
hours trading information back and forth, and I get the feeling
that we think along the same wavelength in most concerns.
It was during one of our conversations that I mentioned to him my
deep desire to someday find a copy of Master Kanei Uechi's book
(I am one of the unfortunate many who wasn't able to get one back
in the late 70s, early 80s, and for all my searching, everybody I
asked always said the same thing: You are out of luck, there are
no more copies left anywhere.) I told him how my hopes were
fading as the years went by and that I was probably out of luck!
He told me that he would check with his sensei and let me know if
he could find one. Needless to say, I didn to put much stock in
his enthusiasm.
As the months passed, I felt my luck was changing. Not only did
my new-found acquaintance on Okinawa hint that there may be a
book left on the island, I was able to find and acquire another
book I had always wanted: Sensei Ted Kresge The Encyclopedia of
Karate and Other Related Martial Arts, which happens to be more
rare than Master Uechi's. Anyway, with my luck changing as it
was, I felt that this time would be the time for Master Uechi's
book. Lo and behold, after a few more conversations a book was
amazingly found (new and practically untouched) and offered to
me, which I immediately accepted and am now the PROUD owner. The
most interesting part of this story is that two people who I have
never met, have never had any connection with, and with whom do
not belong to the same association as I, worked extremely hard to
find me the book I have always wanted. Moreover, they found me
another book on Uechi-ryu that is out of print and offered it to
me (which I again accepted). Then, the package I received had
three different books in it as well as numerous other gifts I did
not expect.
I can not begin to express how I felt about all this: stunned,
excited, breathless, etc. The fact that I found people who
obviously believe as I do in the importance of Budo as a way of
life, and not just a word spread about the dojo, moves me to
believe that there is a strong future in Uechi-ryu/Shohei-ryu.
Not being as good as I would like with the written word, I will
never be able to express the gratitude I feel for those two
people in Okinawa, and I thought others should know.
Mike Murphy, Yondan

It is very nice to hear from those who have experienced the
"whole-heart" style Jim Advincula brings to the martial
arts. I too have not been impressed by the other practitioners
but Sensei took me by the mind and by the throat (figuratively
and literally) and made certain truths undeniably evident.
Isshinryu is very efficient and effective for all conditions and
circumstances. (the fox hole to the performance stage)Sensei will
be celebrating his 50th year in the martial arts this Oct 96 and
we'll be having a celebration for all to come and enjoy. I'll be
posting it on CB in a couple of days. Also he is coming up to do
the Asian Celebration in Feb 97. Seminar for the MA's and an open
forum for the general public. We would love to have all possible
there to share in this great event that Sensei will be but one
part of. Maybe you would like to be a participant?? Email me if
you'd like info and I'll give you details (we had 22,000 people
at last years 12th annual celebration)
Philip Raymond
p.s. I will give him a copy of your message.
[The following letter was sent to me after I requested more
information about the Celebration]
Dear Mr. Mattson,
I am very glad that you showed interest in our celebration.
Enclosed is a program from last year's event. This should give
you an idea of what we do now and why people such as yourself and
Sensei Advincula bringing their years of knowledge and experience
to the general public is the only logical progression to refine
and expand the quality and prestige of our Martial Arts program.
This will be the first time in our 12 year history of asking
outside dignitaries to contribute to the further understanding
and enjoyment of The Asian Martial Arts.
Sensei Advincula was very flattered with the email you sent to
me. I relayed it to him per your request, and I asked him what he
thought of me pursuing your participation in the '97 Celebration.
He said that you were "definitely legit" which if you
know Sensei as I do is rare and very high praise:) . . . . The
Asian Celebration will be held on Feb 22 and 23rd (President's
Weekend) 1997. . . . Sensei Advincula could be the headliner for
Sat the 22nd. You could be for Sun the 23rd if you would like. We
advertise in the entire Pacific Northwest and the headliners
would be named specifically with a short biography for
promotional purposes. . . . Please let me know how you feel about
being a large part of our Celebration. I and our Council would
truly appreciate your participation. . . . Sincerely, Philip
Based on the literature you sent, the Asian Celebration sounds quite exciting. I'll put Sensei Jim Maloney in charge of putting together a demonstration team for the event and I'll do my best to be part of the team. For those of you who may not recognize Jim's name, Mr. Advincula happens to be the premier Isshinryu instructor in North America. Until you see Sensei Advincula's Isshinryu, you haven't seen Isshinryu! GEM

I have some information that may help John Long. First of all,
the format for video in the U.S. is called NTSC. That used by
most of the rest of the world is PAL. The reasons for the
differences have a lot to do with U.S. power being 60 hz vs most
of the rest of the world on 50 hz. The NTSC standard subsequently
has a video frame rate of 30 frames per second (half the power
frequency) and the PAL has 25 frames per second. There are a few
other details like the number of lines on the picture, etc.One of
my students, Bruce Hirabayashi, works for Siemens automotive.
Bruce spent several years in Germany, and opened a Uechi school
there (Regensburg in Bavaria) that is now independent. While
there, I'm fairly certain that Bruce invested in equipment that
allowed him to translate between the two video formats.
I know Bruce may kill me for volunteering him like this, but if
anyone is absolutely desparate, you might try e-mailing him. At
the very least, he can tell you what equipment he bought which
allowed him to do the conversions. If the demand is great, maybe
Bruce could be convinced to start a fee-for-service arrangement.
Anyhow, tell him I sent you, and give him and his family my very
best.

Lets hope Bruce won't be too angry at our publishing his
access to this equipment. I've received many inquiries from the
PAL world regarding video tapes. Perhaps Bruce will be able to
help by providing this conversion service. GEM

Dear Mr Mattson,
My visit to the USA was busy, but most pleasant, and I managed to
train with the Chicago Uechi group and spend time with my old
Sensei George in San Francisco, where he showed me some of your
videos. Is it possible for us to buy the recently released Uechi
Video magazine number 10 (with Master Uechi performing the main
katas), in video format for UK -Australia (not US format)? WE'd
be interested also to purchase for our club a large photo of
Kanbun and of Kanei Uechi, and to find out what other videos,
books, photos etc are available from your company. This coming
Saturday May 25th, my colleague and I are both attempting our
Shodan test, and if successful, we will become the first western
australians to get a black belt in Uechi Ryu. The grading board
is flying over from Sydney for the test.

Unfortunately, the company I use to duplicate tapes is unable to copy to PAL format. Perhaps one of our readers can help out. The photos are not problem. Peabody sells a complete dojo set. Check out the "Products" page on this site. Good luck with your test. GEM

Hi Sensei:
Looked around for comments post tournament, I couldn't find
anything regarding same. My comment - It was absolutely
GREAT.Personally, I had a chance to both Judge and Referee. I
found it to be a great learning experience while still having a
lot of fun. Thank you for a great day. The tournament was very
safe for the contenders. In the ring that I was assigned to a
female contender got kicked very hard in the chest area. She
insisted that she was O.K. The Referee called in the nurse that
was in attendance. By the time he got there I examined the girl
by having her take a very deep breath. If she had felt pain on
doing this then chances were good that 1.She had a broken rib or
2. She had a pnumothorax. She was fine and continued to fight. I
hope in future tournaments you will continue to utilize me.
Your student ....... Marty
Thanks Marty. You and the other officials did a wonderful job.
As a certified judge, you are quailified and certainly will be
asked to officiate again. GEM

On Friday, 31 May 1996 at 8:29 a.m. at Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News, Virginia, our 3rd child, Natasja Sakura Hirabayashi was born. She weighed 7 lbs., 2 oz. (3240g) and was 21 inches (53.3cm) long. Erica is doing fine, though she is quite sore from the c-section/Kaiserschnitt (Natasja was breech -- bottom down). Natasja is doing great: she actually looks like a 10-day old, because she does not have than "cone-head" look that babies get when born vaginally. She's quite lovely (in her father's completely objective opinion) and very quiet (so far). She sleeps most of the time, and when she wakes, she cries pretty softly (especially compared to her older brothers Jean-Luc and Stefan). We are all quite happy and somewhat tired.

with Ernie and his instructor Jack. I have a very high respect
for the both of them. I did not see their names on the list of
Dojo's you have ? I have not talked to Ernie in quite some time,
which is due to both of our schedules, I guess. I was at the
original summer camp in 84(I think), and will never forget that
experience. I was with Ernie from 79-86. I recieved Shodan in 83
from the Board (at that time) out on Thompson (sp) Island in
Boston. I can't remember if you were there or not. Regards,
Jack Gauthier....jgauth38@aol.com
Contact Steve Banchick, who does have a listing on the site,
for information regarding Ernie and Jack. Yes, I was on Thompson
Island! GEM
