It's All Good !

Post by Gary Santaniello »

How many times do we hear comments pertaining to what individuals like and dislike in their style ?

Some state that "Kata" has no relevence to it's practice because it is not used in fighting.

Others feel that pre=arranged drills are bad in that it programs one to do things certain ways.

Conditioning is not needed for those who feel they will never need to take a hard shot or that because adrenal will hande it.

Bunkai has unrealistic pr-arranged application.

Fighting is controlled limiting use of open hand techniques, leg and arm breaking etc.

Some of these statements may have some validity to them. However, all of what we do needs to be worked regardless of what we "choose" to be good and/or bad. We do have the ability to see how various elements of our training can be expanded upon and to uderstand more depth of it.

Writting off certain areas of our training because we seek to understand, appreciate or value it's content is unfair to the totality of development of ones style.

Candidates who go before boards for dan ranks must show ability in "overall' development of all requirements. If one feels that they are lacking enough depth into any area of their training, possibly visiting and working out with others may prove to be beneficial. Although some instructors may not agree with this theory, working out with different seniors from various schools has helped me to understand different veiws and/or opinions of what i study.

Look for what is good in "all" aspects of what we/you study and find how it can work to help make us better.

Your thoughts?
