watered down?

Post by SEAN C »

Sensei Giella,

I am fortunate to live in a time where masters such as Mattson, et al., are so accessible! I am not part of any organization, but just someone who has found something good in martial arts. I have nothing but respect for the knowledge and hard work of those who have gone before. It's truly amazing to me that I can converse with so many masters of Uechi ryu on this forum! If nothing else, I think that martial arts in general can only benefit from the free exchange of information that is now available. It's funny, but if I wasn't on the computer, but rather in a dojo, I don't think I would be willing to ask so many questions, or voice so many opinions. I'm sure if Kanbun where alive today, he would be learning as much as he could. And teaching so many more!

Bill,
As I said to Rich recently, the way to get more people in those 2 hour advanced classes is to take the sticks and knives out more regularly. (okay, I'm a little biased here, but it's still a good idea)
Couldn't resist putting up that post, my friend.

watered down?

I don't know if things have been watered down or not. The evidence in Uechi seems a bit obscured, does'nt it? We don't really even know WHAT Shushiwa taught Kanbun Uechi. Has anyone ever heard of "pangainoon" outside of Uechi-ryu references? Anyone ever heard of it in China? Sure they've heard of Shushiwa... did he teach "pangainoon"(translation: GOJO!) or was that Kanbun's name for it? Did Chojun Miyagi "steal" Kanbun's name for his style, or vise-versa?

In other traditions the evidence of "blunting" is clear. However, the history of those styles seems clearer as well.

Yes, yes, Kanbun was not God, we can find the "secrets" by ourselves, Good points. I just like the history and development stuff.

Also, I really do believe some of these guys survived a few real fights. Kanbun was in China during the Boxer Rebellion learning from a "shaolin" who was "sought" by the government. Ever wonder about that? Ever wonder why he left China and wanted his past to remain obscured, especially while he resided on Okinawa? Especially when Chinese people came around his farm asking questions and saying they knew him as a "boxer" in China? Ever look at the man's picture - into his eyes? Ever notice the development of his neck area that shows underneath his tunic? How many of us in this world have lived that kind of a life? A few, I will concede. Los Angeles cops for example. Some war veterans, maybe.

One thing my teacher taught me was to be conscious of respect. Respect yourself first( ie. respect your own ability to practice, interpret, understand, and yes INNOVATE.), and also respect those who came before and experienced different things. These arts have been around for a long time, and despite what some may suggest were tempered and forged in battles. I respect that.

As the saying goes "seek what they sought".....

Yes, we are all thankfull for our modern day masters.

To Raffi sensei: Longer classes with more time for sticks and knives? It is coming. More later.....
