Nice post. I like to think of muscle memory getting me through tough spots. Practice enough repetition, and your body will react without a lot of thought. Once you've reacted and blocked the first ones, you can start using your higher brain functions to get creative.

Justin

Irrespective of the existence of a God, there are good health reasons (physical and psychological) for having a belief system. There are also sound martial reasons. Rational research supports that. So that's another good reason not to proselytize.

Alas as an athiest, you likely won't get ...

Yes, "Saving Private Ryan" is great. When it first came out, I went and saw it with my father. He's a WW2 vet, and he was impressed.
"Patton" is fun, and one of George C. Scott's best, though his performance in "Christmas Carol" is outstanding.
I used to watch "Combat" and "Rat Patrol" on television ...

The more I read, the more interesting this is becoming. Has anyone ever heard of a timeline that illustrates the evolution and geneology of the various offshoots? I would love to see something that starts with Kanbun Uechi and moves forward from there. Sounds like it would take a lot of research ...

A history of the "schism"?

I've heard through a number of sources about the schism that took place after the death of Sensei Kanei Uechi in 1991, but no single source I've seen seems to relate more than a passing reference to it. Does anybody know of a succint and impartial summary of what actually happened? I am trying to ...

It sounds like he was an inspirational human being. Hopefully I'll find a copy of his book. Thanks for all of the helpful and insightful replies.

I'm one of the older people in my dojo, but you guys are starting to make me feel like a kid!
I don't have a good point of reference for how hard I'm training. I started taking classes during "parent appreciation month" under Sensei Mike Rozumick. My two daughters were (and still are) taking class ...

I'm finally starting to understand Uechi-Ryu

I've been studying Uechi-ryu for 3 years, and will be testing for Shodan at the end of March. All throughout my training I've heard people say that you really start learning Uechi once you get your black belt. Now that I'm close, I'm actually understanding what they've been talking about. Everything ...

One note on searching for Allen's books, he had a couple of different books. "Uechi-Ryu 2000" was I think the last one. I have an earlier one from around 1996, The Uechi-Ryu Handbook" I think it is called. I believe "Uechi-Ryu 2000" was essentially a second edition of the one I have, but either ...

Actually Allen died in February 2005. But you are correct that he self-published his books and to my knowledge they are not published any more. Every once in a while I see one listed on Ebay, used sources like that are pretty much the only way to get one today.

Thanks. I thought I saw a notice ...

Looking for Uechi book by Allen Moulton

A friend lent me a copy of "Uechi-Ryu 2000" by Allen Moulton, and I've been trying to find a copy for myself. Many web searches later, I've only found one reference to the book in an article. It looks like Allen published the book himself. The book lists the publisher as "Moulton Publishing", and ...
