Hello,
It has recently been brought to my attention that there is a new danger that we rarely train to avoid, that even kids are clever enough to do. Let me explain (Sorry Dave, since we go to the same school of course you've heard this already).
There was a fight recently between some high school ...

School yard scuffles
I just wanted to hear some opinions on a matter that has been plaguing me for some time.
I think there has been a time throughout school where all of us have seen a school yard fight of some kind. A lot of them are avoidable, some of are hard to get away from. As I'm sure most of us would do ...

Favorite Style Of Martial Arts and Do You Take Class???
I wouldn't say that I have a personal favorite other than the one that I am a practitioner of which is Meibu-kan Goju-ryu Karate Do and yes I do take classes. Good luck with your classes next month.

The obstacle course and "fun stuff" sounds like a good idea on keeping the kids interested coming back for more every week. What I've noticed in kids is that if the instructor gets annoyed (although well intended making sure that they get it right or they could lose were they attacked) the kids get ...

Would You Care2
I sure as hell would. I did some thinking about this one, and yes, karate is about self defense, but it is also an art. Best way to keep our young ones intrested?
As my dad always said and had seen many times before, you can prod them as you are doing which is a good thing, but forcing them will just lead to disinterest and boredom. The harder they're pushed or forced the more they'll want to quit.

To be honest when I didn't learn or see much of Sanchin for a while when I was younger (being the youngest student at the class then), but when I saw my father do Sanchin I was amazed. My kind patriarch had become a demon. His back and arms were turned from those of a guy who looked like he couldn't ...

I recall from my training as a child when I was that age (5 or 6 years of age) that I loved in particular sparring and technique. I had not yet discovered a love and passion for karate as I do now and saw kata as boring and simplistic; not seeing how they helped my progression in karate. Techniques ...
